Nick_Yoon Posted November 4, 2006 Share #1 Posted November 4, 2006 Advertisement (gone after registration) Hi, I'm travelling to Cuba later this month - I've read about the restrictions on bringing film in - 6 rolls per person. What has been people's experience? Have you been hassled by customs in Havana for bringing in more than 6 rolls of film? Thanks, Nick

Rona!d Posted November 4, 2006 Share #2 Posted November 4, 2006 Nick, nobody will give you a guaranty when you take more than the official limit, but have a look here (from your profile i see you are from Zurich/Switzland, so i think you understand a little german): http://www.leica-camera-user.com/leica-kundenforum/8526-kuba-darf-eingefuehrt-werden.html
Nick_Yoon Posted November 4, 2006 Author Share #3 Posted November 4, 2006 Hi Ronald, Thanks for the link...my German is pretty bad, but I understood what they wrote. I will shoot mainly digital but will also bring some Kodachrome. Thanks, Nick
rob_x2004 Posted November 5, 2006 Share #4 Posted November 5, 2006 I wouldn't have given it a moments thought. How did you find out about it in the first place and where would you look to find out about this sort of thing? Bit of an eye opener. Thanks. Nick_Yoon Posted November 5, 2006 Author Share #5 Posted November 5, 2006 I came across it reading posts about Cuba on photo.net.
bayerische Posted November 10, 2006 Share #6 Posted November 10, 2006 Why would any country restrict the amount of film to be carried in? Sounds completely idiotic... I would like to hear the reasons from the more enlighted:)
Pablito Posted November 17, 2006 Share #7 Posted November 17, 2006 Advertisement (gone after registration) airport x-rays are a non-issue IF you carry on and DO NOT check your film in the hold and do not use film over 400 or 800 ISO. I travel all over the world with film. It gets xrayed numerous times. Any working photographer who travels with film can confirm this. Just be sure to NEVER put film in checked baggage, not even once. If you must travel with really fast film like P3200, then your powers of negotiation will come into play because P3200 can be fogged by xrays. In the USA the airport security folks will recognize fast film and hand inspect it by swabbing but they will have to open each plastic film container. Outside the USA, it's a gamble, you just never know. I strongly suggest not "getting smart" and mixing your lower ISO film in with your high ISO film in hopes of getting hand inspection for all the films. If you do this, you'll have to separate them out if you're lucky - if you're not lucky they'll make you xray the whole bunch. On another matter - YOU are lucky - it's much harder for me to go to Cuba with my US passport!! But many photographers go to Cuba and shoot extensively, using film, for months at a time. Where do they get their film if they don't bring it in?
jandirk Posted November 17, 2006 Share #8 Posted November 17, 2006 Nick, I went to Cuba for several weeks in January 2003, and brought in 75 35mm slide films in lead pouches. I wasn't checked at either entry or departure. Best, JD
Nick_Yoon Posted November 18, 2006 Author Share #9 Posted November 18, 2006 Thanks for all the advice. I leave tomorrow for Cuba - according to our local contacts, airport customs is being very fussy and they're watching out for unapproved journalists travelling to Cuba with all the rumours about Castro's condition. They advised us to bring the minimum of equipment and try not to look like a journalist. So I'm taking just an Epson R-D1 with a couple of lenses. moikle Posted November 19, 2006 Share #10 Posted November 19, 2006 I was unaware that Cuba had a restiction. Is it new? I visited in June 2005 and took 30 films in, no one queried a thing. Mike
fotografr Posted November 20, 2006 Share #11 Posted November 20, 2006 What's next, a restriction allowing just up to 1 Gig memory cards?
rob_x2004 Posted November 20, 2006 Share #12 Posted November 20, 2006 Brent, I guess you leave your Rolex at home, your shirt tails hanging out and rip your jeans at the knees, and scratch off the Gig stickers and replace them with an assortment of 16k, 32k, and 256k cards. Nick_Yoon Posted December 7, 2006 Author Share #13 Posted December 7, 2006 Just got back from Cuba on Monday. After all the fuss about restrictions, we walked through Customs without a single bag being checked!
