I would guess a Canon 450D with one of Canon's long consumer zooms would weigh less, have equal or better image quality, be more ergonomic and be more versatile than a G1 with for instance a Tele-Elmar 135. And make a better travel kit together with an M8 and wideangly lenses.

Thanks. An interesting approach. I had thought that a G1 would be much smaller and lighter. Maybe I am wrong. In any event, I am picky about which Canon lenses. I use a 24-105 and a 70-300 DO on my 5d mkii. That's a kit that is too big and heavy to lug around traveling. Neither lens is a lightweight and even on a plastic Canon body would be a handful to carry. I had a Canon consumer grade long zoom some time ago and was not happy at all with the IQ. Since I rarely use anything really long when traveling, I was hoping just to have something small and light for the few times I'd want it. It may be that the compromises are not worth it.

Another alternative that is often overlooked is the Pentax K20D (fairly light and compact) and the various Pentax pancake lenses.

Cheers,
