andrewrossphotographs Posted October 31, 2006 Share #1 Posted October 31, 2006 Advertisement (gone after registration) Hi I noted on Michael Reichmans's review the following point: "Start-up time at 2 seconds is on the slow side for a contemporary camera" but Sean Reids review mentions it as almost instant..... hmmmm! I didn't test this when I got a chance to see the M8, but is this a real problem? Does that mean when the camera is set to sleep the camera will delay for that decisive moment shot? Anyone care to comment who tested the camera for this and clarify more. Cheers Andrew
Advertisement Posted October 31, 2006 Posted October 31, 2006 Hi andrewrossphotographs, Take a look here M8: Start-up time. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
pascal_meheut Posted October 31, 2006 Share #2 Posted October 31, 2006 Almost instant to me too. I just did some measurements: first shot after turning it on in less than 1 sec but more than 1/2 th. If I have the body in my hands and I press the shutter to wake it up, I can shoot even before I had time to bring it to my eye. 2 secs is the value in Leica's documentation, almost instant is real use experience. renambot Posted October 31, 2006 Share #3 Posted October 31, 2006 I tried the camera in the store saturday, and I didn't feel any annoying delay: turn on, bring camera to eye, setting aperture, focusing... The camera was ready before me. Luc

cbretteville Posted October 31, 2006 Share #5 Posted October 31, 2006 Speculation: It could simply be that 2 seconds is a "worst possible case" value. On startup, the camera must check the card in the slot. If that is an older, slow SD card the check will take more time than with a 'modern' fast card. - Carl
pascal_meheut Posted October 31, 2006 Share #6 Posted October 31, 2006 Just tried with an Sandisk II. Startup is allmost as fast as the Transcend 150x. So to go to 2 secs, you'll need a very, very slow card.
andrewrossphotographs Posted October 31, 2006 Author Share #7 Posted October 31, 2006 Advertisement (gone after registration) Thanks everyone! You are all so very helpful! I know you can switch sleep off but I got use to the short delay with Nikon system and hate those delays you get with compacts. I presume the main reason is the fact the camera has to apply the lens detection before it checks the sensor, perhaps if you switch off lens detection it also is faster.....but it's reassuring that bringing it to the eye from "off" or "sleep" is normal.
