petewayne Posted March 28, 2009 Share #1 Posted March 28, 2009 Advertisement (gone after registration) Nestled below the highest hill in South East England (ancient Walbury Hill) are two haunted locations......the first sits atop a Neolithic Long Barrow on Gallows Hill and is known as Combe Gibbet. Erected in 1676 (and replaced every century since) it was built to hang George Broomham and Dorothy Newman who where discovered having an affair by George's wife and son who they murdered. Unfortunately "Mad Thomas" witnessed the foul deed and told the authorities who subsequently tried in court the lovers for double murder. The gibbet was then built and only ever used to hang the lovers although it remains to deter criminals. Combe Gibbet Below Gallows Hill in the hidden combe is the village of Combe with a small church dedicated to St Swithuns, around which centuries of villagers have been interred and in the shadow of the Yew Trees, which are many centuries old, half forgotten tales are told of strange goings on, of spook lights and of ghosts walking the sunken lane that runs beside the graveyard. Marquinius Posted March 28, 2009 Share #2 Posted March 28, 2009 Pete, I really am touched by these dark images. I love the way the (I think) crusifixion pole stands against the sky, while the cross is really very well framed under the tree. Great! azzo Posted March 28, 2009 Share #3 Posted March 28, 2009 Pete, I really love the mood and tones in your first post. Re the 2nd image - Nicely documented too.
biglouis Posted March 28, 2009 Share #4 Posted March 28, 2009 Peter Great pictures and a fascinating tale, especially #1 which has such a dark, brooding appearance. This looks like the type of gibbet where the condemned were made to walk up a ladder and then expected to step off it (or be pushed off it) in order to hang. roguewave Posted March 28, 2009 Share #5 Posted March 28, 2009 Pete, both are excellent images. The power of the first has been documented before me. I love the light creeping in on the stonework & shakes in the second. Very lovely indeed.
