erlingmm Posted April 27, 2009 Share #61 Posted April 27, 2009 Advertisement (gone after registration) Just received the SF 58 and use it on an M8 with coded lenses. Most of the functionality is rather obvious, but am confused about the f setting on the flash in both TTL and A mode. A certain f value is set in both modes, and seems to influence the result. I would have thought that the TTL mode at least would be fully automatic, given that there is sufficient light, both in A and M mode on the camera. Still an f value and a corresponding maximum distance is in the flash display. Is it just a guideline, or does it influence the result? In A mode (on the flash), should the aperture value of the camera be the same as the flash to get correct exposure? The setting on the flash seems to influence the amount of light emitted, but I am not sure I understand how... Excuse my stupid questions, I have not used a flash since I had a DSLR, and never before on a rangefinder...

I think you will find it is to give the maximum distance indication for that f number and lens. I am a little surprised that it is not intelligent enough to automatically set itself initially to the maximum f number for the lens fitted on an M8. I have just tried it. I had an f4 MATE fitted and the flash was showing f4. I took the MATE off and fitted a 35 1.4 Lux. When I switched on the flash and camera, although the zoom changed to 35 (I had the MATE at 50mm), the f number on the flash display stayed at f4. It does not change after you take a photo at f1.4.
