Absolutely right! BC it is.

Naming the region (province) was sufficient to solve the riddle... so thanks and over to you, stuny.

It is the Fraser River right upstream of Lillooet, BC. Due to some climate anomaly, the area around Lillooet is the "warm spot" of all of Canada... so I find Michael's original guess (Northern Italy) to be very inspired...
