Dunoon

 

That's right, Asmus, so over to you

 

 

Dunoon.....

 

a merry hunt ....... somewhat confused by the fact that Rothesay has a very similar pier building....:rolleyes:

 

Rothesay is in the same style, and likely by the same architect, but Dunoon's pier is the grandest of the Victorian/ Edwardian piers that lined the Firth of Clyde. They were built for steamers like the Waverley which took Glaswegians "soon the watter" for their holidays, and commuters (like my grandfather) to Gourock for trains to Greenock or Glasgow. The coming of car ferries made these old wooden piers obsolete, and the future of Dunoon's is uncertain
