I said the other day that I've been lucky with my M8, no problems. I did have a Card Lock problem which seemed to have gone away after I went back to using SanDisk Extreme III cards, but now the camera is acting up again.

Has anyone sent their cameras for repair on this issue? How much was the damage? My warranty expired last month. Leica quality is not what it used to be.

Well I think I tricked the camera and got it to work again. I turned it on without the card and got the message "no card." I then turned it off and inserted the card, turned it on and it's back to normal. This kind of stuff can be really frustrating.

I believe this is a problem with the latest release of the software. Although it seems near impossible to prove it. I have the same problem with one of my new M8.2 bodies ..has happened maybe 5-6 times . It has not happened with my original M8 (which has the new software as well), the 3rd body another M8.2 with the 2.0 software has been fine.

The method you used cleared my error as well and I lost only one image.

Perhaps it is an issue with the new firmware. My issue was with a Lexar 8gb shdc card. Brand new card, exposed 47 images and my 8.2 indicated the card was full. In short, the camera could not get past this message. Returned the card to camera shop, they sent it back to Lexar twice, with Lexar indicating the card was fine. Loaded the card in a 8.2 with the old firmware and the card worked fine. Loaded the card into an 8.2 with the new firmware and the camera indicated card full. I went back and forth with Lexar, Leica (who indicated they were not aware of any issues with cards in the new firmware) and my shop (Eight Elm Street Camera in Toronto who were great) for the last few weeks with the end result the Lexar card never worked with the new firmware. Finally we just replaced the card with two Sandisk 4gb shdc. I have been using an 8gb Sandisk extreme 3 shdc since buying my camera with no issues.

George

Sounds good.

Back to the firmware, before the upgrade I used Sandisc Ultra II cards with no problems, now they are virtually useless.

I use 8GB SDHC cards without problems except at one time when I pulled the cardreader out of the USB port without prior software release via the "Safely remove hardware" icon.

I formated the card and problem was solved.

Since then I always release the cardreader by software and have not had any problems at all.

Steve

I am not familiar with downloading of the images from Leica but does your software either computer or camera ask if you want to delete images after downloading? If it does, it may be that your FAT (File Allocation Table) on your memory is getting contaminated. This files job is to keep track of all the cards information.

It is best to reformat your card after each download. This re-installs a fresh and complete FAT file to your media. If you don't do this, it's possible for the FAT file to get fragmented and/or loose data that is needed.

Steves mention of releasing the card via software in part prompted my comment along with the same thing happening with some D200 users. My D200 never had this problem but I always reformatted after an download.

Hope this helps someone.

Wilfredo, was the shutter setting on Single shot or Continuous? I'm just curious--I've had lockups with all the recent firmwares but only when the battery was low and only when I'm shooting on C. I haven't upgraded to the latest firmware yet.

I'd also do a reset of the camera to see if that makes a difference.

I use Extreme 3 2GB cards, non-SDHC. Don't know if that makes a difference.

The camera is on Single shot mode and the battery is fully charged. I'm going to have to send it back to Leica for repair and bite the bullet.

Que bueno para los Vascos :-) Y gracias por lo de "sede." Eso tiene arreglo.

Please keep us up to date on what leica indicates.

The evidence does not support problems with the cards themselves (although specific cards maybe more problematic). I rotate my cards (by number) when on a shoot....and have lexar, transcend and sandisk cards in 2gb (SD) and 4gb(SDHC). Initially I had failures (card full after a dozen images) with the 2gb transcend and the 4gb transcend cards. In between the M8.2 functioned perfectly with with Lexar 2gb (SD) cards.

To eliminate specific card problems ..I went to 2 brand new Lexar Pro 133X 4GB SDHC cards. Both failed within a few days.

My other body ..an M8..with the latest software had no similar problems.

My 3rd body an M8.2 has had no problems ..but I kept it running on release 2.0 ..until this gets sorted out.

While it could be the battery being run down or a corrupted card...its not likely. I always start each shoot with a fully charged battery and change the battery and card after about 100 images ...since I am using 2 bodies this is a practical approach for me.

Cards are always formatted in the body...frequently twice. When I take out a card for downloading ..I put in a new one and reformat. Before I start a shoot I typically go over all my camera settings and reformat again.

On my M8 s I had zero failures due to cards or batteries in 2008 ..20K images.

This is a new issue and must be firmware related as its effecting both M8 s and new M8.2 s.

Fortunately I have been able to clear it by replacing the card and have lost only a few images.

Sorry to hear this. I suspect the Extreme III cards!

Do you mean that the card was empty but the camera was saying 'full' in the viewfinder? I only ask because this has happened once with my Extreme III card. I did not have a spare with me but when I got home I formatted the card in my card reader (which I never do) and then it started working again perfectly in the camera. I do not have a high opinion of SanDisk cards so I blamed it on the card rather than the camera.
