Â My retailer tells me that the Summilux 50mm f/1.4 for my M8 is a "forgotten lens" and does not have a manufacturer which makes the UV/IR filter for it. Is this true??? Please advise. Thanks. robsteve Posted January 15, 2009 Share #5 Â Posted January 15, 2009 The B+W filters are the wrong thread pitch. Leica has an odd pitch on the 43mm threads on the Summilux. Â I don't have the numbers handy, but I think the Leica pitch is .5 thread per mm, while the B+W uses a pitch of .75 thread per mm in that size. ho_co Posted January 21, 2009 Share #10 Â Posted January 21, 2009 In my experience, the problem with the B+W filter isn't the thread, but the fact that it doesn't accept the lens hood reversed as the Leica filter does. (And IIRC, the hood doesn't fit right-way-round with the 486 filter, either.) Â I bought the Biermann u. Weber filter (very reasonable) but then damaged my hood trying to get it onto the lens with filter attached. Â Anyone know what Leica charges to repair a 12586 hood? I'm afraid to send it for fear of demonstrating my stupidity (how would they ever take me seriously again? ). Â My suggestion: If you're using the original hood with your Summilux, get the Leica filter because it has the needed groove for the hood to grasp. Â Probably. Um, except for swapping the B+W or Heliopan filter glass into any older Leica E43 filter mount. Or um, cutting a shallow groove around the outside rim of the B+W or Heliopan. Or um, knocking the glass out of a grooved Leica E43 filter and putting the empty mount in front of the B+W or Heliopan (the hood won't vignette). Also there is a 43mm screw-in vented hood from Heavystar on fleabay that would work instead of the Leica hood. Note also that Leica only makes the E43 UV/IR in silver (might offend some peoples' sense of esthetic to put one on a black lens). Link to post Share on other sites More sharing options...

The shop which I went to was out of Leica version and they said I was getting the last B+W one in stock. Apparently, this 43mm filter is not easy to find. Â Thanks for everyone's help! My hood does not attach to the filter, which (in original Leitz) is smaller than the outside of the lens, and quite thin in the UVa filter I have mounted on my 50mm Summilux, #2073XXX. Â Regarding Non-Leica UV/IR filters: I bought a non-Leica one. I can get the hood over it just fine, but it won't latch on the lens, and can fall off easily. I don't know whether the "new" Leica E43 chrome UV/IR filters are THIN enough to permit this hood to latch on the lens. The filter I have is too thick. THe clamp on the interior of the hood cannot engage the groove because the filter itself is so thick that the hood can't go back far enough on the lens to reach the groove that holds the filter on. Â Does anyone know whether the currently sold Leica E43 UV/IR filter referred to in RobSteve's post is thin enough so that this hood will latch and stay on? Â The Leica 43mm uv/ir filter has a groove that the hoods latch onto mounted or reversed. This applies to the older XIOOM and 12521 hoods used for the 1st and early 2nd version mounts as well as the newer 12586 hoods used by most of the v2 50'luxes. They are only made in chrome. Â The Leica filter fist on my 1959 v1 and my 1983 v2 50'lux. I seem to recall the 43mm B+W uv/ir I have for my 75mm Heliar doesn't screw fully in on the v1 'lux (haven't tried it on the v2), but I may be mistaken its been a while since I tried it. I'll retest when I get home. Â An alternative is to buy an old Leica E43 filter ( that has the groove) on eBay and move the glass from a B+W filer. Double Negative Posted May 9, 2009 Share #20 Â Posted May 9, 2009 The Leica 43mm filter definitely has the wrong pitch (.5 vs. .75) but I use it with my Zeiss ZM lenses okay. I thread it in as far as it will go and it snugs up; so far no issues. Â For normal lenses, B+W would be the way to go. In the case of this Lux, use the Leica.
