This chap has the distinction of being the first stranger I have approached and asked to take his photo. It didn't hurt a bit.

I find that this is an excellent moment captured but it needs some minor adjustments in PS Levels into something like this.

Thanks for taking the time Ivan. I really must get more enthusiastic with the contrast slider as lately I am consistently getting this feedback. I think it started since I got my own scanner and have been scanning "flat" (without much contrast). I do a bit of PP but I clearly could do more. I value the feedback. This is one of the great benefits of being a member of this forum.

Great shot, its funny how once you have a agreement with somebody, its easier to develop the shot. (or at least I find it helps in that I can take multiple images )

 

In school one of my favorite teachers had a rule of thumb about contrast, generally speaking there should always be something bright white and something solid black, his words were something like "if you don't use all the available shades in the paper...." the hard part is that I have been shooting color for the last 10 years and find it very hard to throw away information from the scan.. you are not alone.

The basics of this (subject, moment & composition) are excellent, and Ivan's contrast and tonal changes elevate it to superb.
