Advice on Summicron or -lux ?

Despite my affection for my little D-Lux 4, I've decided to hold on to shooting film as well.

I have a Nikon Coolscan V ED and I'm familiar with the work stream but I've decided to go Leica all the way - meaning that my (very) old Canon F-1 (sob...) and its lenses (50mm, 85 mm and 135 mm) will have to give way to an M 6 (plus 1 lens - at least for the time being.)

I've had a very good offer for an M6 house and the choice between a 50 mm f/2.0 Summicron and a 50 mm f/1.4 Summilux. Small price difference but nothing that really makes a big deal.

But basically I'd rather have a 35 mm than a 50 mm :o

I have to make up my mind on Monday, so I'd be most grateful to hear the pole of my co-members of the forum: What to choose ? Should I even drop the lens and just go for the house only ?

Thanks in advance ! :)

All the best

Thanks all !!

The '-lux is NOT the ASPH version if that's what you mean, Erik.

But both lenses are in excellent condition and worth the price. And so is the house.

So no question about the bargain as such and it will surely go to someone else if not to me.

Conclusion so far: I think I'll have to go for the '-lux. I can't have just a "house" about the house without the posibility to work with it. (I'll scrimp and save for the 35 mm at a later stage...)

Thanks for taking the time to post on this thread.... much obliged :-)

I'm using the 50mm Summicron but am thinking about trading it for a 50mm Summilux. The 2.0 is flawless but sometimes I could use that extra stop.

When it comes to 35mm, things are getting a little bit more difficult.

Pre-asph 35mm Summilux - Soft, very compact, will show strong flare when having point light sources at 1.4. I have this lens and like it's 'old fashioned' look but it is not to everyone's taste.

ASPH 35mm Summilux - Could be fine on film, however in combination with a digital M a focal shift when stopping down can be noticed. Some report their lens was fine but the one I tested wasn't. It is also quite some money for a 35mm lens, which is not the most challenging of all constructions...

There are more options by Zeiss, which I never tried and Cosina-Voigtländer.

During the One-Challenge, Brian let me try his Nokton 1,2/35. I liked this lens but it is large and rather heavy.

I like the pre asph version of the lux the best. Not the first one, but the second and third. The third is my fav. Its the one with the 46mm filter thread. The prev and first has 43mm. If you find out that you want a 35mm over the 50 you can always sell it and buy the 35mm instead ;-)

The Zeiss 35mm Biogon is an really awesome performer btw and can be found used for 600-650$

Marie-Louise,

You're bound to end up with more than one lens sooner or later. Each and every one of us has that Leica Bug here. :)

From what I can tell already, you like going wide in your images and that is why you'd rather have a 35mm.

Between the two lenses you mention, I'd go for the 'lux one.

ps Let us know when you get the 35mm :D

Marie-Louise, you say you'd prefer a 35mm over a 50mm. If that is the case I would buy the M6 body only and keep looking for a 35mm lens.

That's what I was thinking too: if you want a 35, get a 35 and save yourself the money spent on a 50 you won't be (entirely) happy with. You'll end up buying the 35 in the end.

Thanks a lot Patb, Ivan and Allan

Still the same conclusion: The lux it is - although it's a 50.

Because I believe it's a bargain and because I have to have something working from day one.

Long term plan is a 35. Now let's see how long is "long"...:-)

I'll let you know...

All the best

I bought the sumicron first to "save some money." A year later, I just had to have the lux ASPH. The 1.4 aperature is a lot more useful than I first thought. It is now bolted on my MP. So much for saving money.

That's exactly what I did, except I have the pre-asph lux. Now my summicron sits in the closet, because I just find too many opportunities to use that f/1.4. And mine is practically WELDED on my MP! :D

Right choice, also for the s/n is very close to my Lux ... :) ... it was my preferred 50 with my M4. Get accustomed to it, so you'll learn which could be the right 35 for you (keep in mind... when one starts to use these items, CANNOT avoid to desire some other lens... a consideration from a guy who topped to about 40 Leitz lenses... :p ) :

- If you look for more sharpness, go for the Summicron 35 asph

- If you aren't so sure to need a 35, go for a Summaron 35 f 3,5

- If you really like a lot your 50, go for a Summilux 35 pre-asph

- If you get crazy about wide open shooting... CV 35 f 1,2
