Hi Everyone,

I am in the market for an M-Mount 50mm 1.4 Summilux pre-ASPH. I understand there are different versions.

If i understand the basics, there are two main distinctions, first gen using the E43 filters and being in Chrome. The later gens in Black using the E46 filters...and the last generation having a slide-out lens hood as similar to the latest gen 50mm Summicron?

As for the fine differences, it's my understanding the latest versions of the 50mm 1.4 pre-ASPH had a reduced focusing distance to .7m?

Would appreciate any clarifications.

Also, what would be a fair price for the version Summilux pre-ASPH which has the slide-out lens hood?

Much thanks!

Christian

Christian,

Your best bet would be to start checking the auction sites for what has sold recently. The older chrome version should go for about $800 in EX+ shape. But the latest version with built-in hood is still in pretty good demand and may be harder to find. I would expect from $1200 to $2000 for a nice one. I'm currently looking at a new one at my dealers. It's new old stock. He wants $2000 for it. I never see them for sale at KEH by the way.

Perhaps someone should ask them <grin>.[/Quote]

I have sudgested a few times in the past to Alistair that they do but I think they get too many free plugs.

Which is unfair on those dealers who DO choose to support us...

Andy I agree so maybe there's a filter someone can set up to block links to dealers that don't advertise on this forum. Or just delete the posts when they do include a link or even the mention of the dealer.

So if someone is looking for a particular lens and/or camera we wouldn't be able to mention the fact that a dealer had one in stock?

How many dealers outside of Europe advertise on the forum? Would they be banned as well? I assume so.

Banning people from mentioning particular dealers would be totally the wrong way to go IMHO.

Please, please, PLEASE tell me that was a joke!

There are a couple of US dealers who advertise, but most are European - unless, of course, people in different parts of the world get different ads fed to them...

I wouldn't advocate banning any posts with links to dealers provided it's a link that's relevant to a thread. General "oh look what Dealer X has in stock this week" would not be acceptable, I'd say, unless it was something exceptionally rare or interesting in a more general context.

It's just a shame that some dealers don't understand or appreciate the number of members here, and the members' activity in the buying of kit market. Ivan at Red Dot Cameras is a prime example of a dealer being linked to a couple of times, and seeing the potential of the forum as a business generator. Having bought from him myself, and knowing that the London mob take advantage of his hospitality regularly ( :) ), I am sure that he has more than made up the cost of the advert, so everyone wins.

Just where did I say to BAN people on this forum for posting links to dealers that do NOT advertise on this forum.

No it was no joke. What is the problem with the owner of this forum not allowing links to dealers that don't advertise. It could be replaced with a "Link Removed" line and nothing else done to the post.

Yes we all want to promote Leica but we also, I, want this forum to continue. It makes it's revenue off the ads.

I didn't mention banning people for mentioning other dealers, I wrote that you were proposing to ban them _from_ mentioning other dealers. You wrote...

Now to me that sounds like a total ban on any reference to a dealer for whatever reason, We would not be allowed to even MENTION other dealers. Presumably that would also exclude any mention of things such as Luigi's cases - after all the sponsoring dealer's sell cases.

Christian there is an extra version (3 altogether). (i) silver, E43, 1M closest focus, (ii) black, E43, 1M, (iii) silver & black, E46, 0.7M. The first and second versions take an E43 filter with a 0.5 filter thread pitch - it can be difficult to find filters that screw in properly. There was also a small run of the third version in black paint, one sold on RFF for (I think) $1700 this week within a couple of hours of being posted. I have the 2nd version and love it, I also use the 50 ASPH but won't sell my pre-ASPH - too good a lens.

I guess it depends whether you see this as a site for sharing information or not. There was a thread the other day about which UK Leica dealers that were open between Christmas and New Year. Ffordes were mentioned. Red Dot and Robert White were closed. What if you had asked that question, and the reply read: "<Link removed> is open, and have the item you're looking for in stock". Not of much help is it?

Ffordes get mentioned because they are ace people to deal with, they have been of great help to many of us that frequent this forum. They have earned their position, regardsless of their financial support of this community.

If only dealers that pay for it can get mentioned around here, what's the point? While I'm writing this, there is an ad in the upper right corner, for a company I have dealt with before, but will never deal with again due to some truly shite customer service. But, hey, they pay so I guess it is OK.
