What magnifiers + lens combos are best on M8?

I haven't gotten a chance to look through the 1.25 or 1.4 magnifiers yet and was wondering what are some of the experiences that people have had using these with multiple lenses? What lens + magnifier combinations seem to work the best on the M8?

My impression is that the 1.25 is good with 50-75...and the 1.4 is more useful with the longer lenses. Is this true?

Hi , I have 1.4 , and from 35 to wider you can't see the framelines , but , its a miracle for me , now I normally get everything in focus . I still use my glasses and the magnifier , if not , I would had to thought of changing to another camera .

Cheers

I use 1.4x, a bliss I'd say...

since I got it I finally focus with the 75 Cron.

And it is a joy to work with the 50.

I keep it on with the 35 'Cron also, although you have to be more frame careful.

With a little exercise you find your way easy with the 25 also. I do.

1.4 is better than 1.25 on the M8.

Some time ago I had a 1.25x. It made the finder darker, and also it stood proud enough that if someone accidentally bumped the camera whilst I was sighting, the magnifier could hit hardly into my eye. Also, I found out it was the royal pain to go between wide and regular lenses, because to see the frame line of wides required taking off the magnifier, and unless I stopped to put it in the little leather case, I was with $300 little piece flying about on the chain. Also mine needed sending back to Leica because it fell in pieces (which I read happened also to many). I think these are better for who uses 2 bodies, keeping the magnifier always on one. At least, it was so for me.

i have the megaperls 1.35 with variable focus, and leave it on the camera all the time. for 50 and 75mm, it's verrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrry useful; for 35mm useful and not too much of a hindrance. for 21mm, it's useful for focusing if necessary, then switch to the 28mm external finder for picture composition.

from another forum post, i read that a small O ring around the magnifier does a good job of keeping the variable focus in one position = no need to constantly re-adjust.

good luck with your magnifier!

The megaperls 1.35x finder worked great for me down to 35MM and it has the huge advantage of having an extremely low profile. An o-ring from a sink washer kit keeps the diopter ring from spinning. Unfortunately mind dropped off my camera and I haven't had time to replace it.

For those who wear glasses:

I use the 1.35 & assume the same holds for the 1.4: it's hard to see the 35 framelines with glasses on, so the magnifier is useful only for 50 & above.

Actually I use it permanently on 1 body for 50mm lens or for changing to 21mm lens with external finder. It's always easier to see the rangefinder patch with the magnifier.

PS, I like the diopter setting in the Megaperls finder. You get an added feature & for about half the price of the Leica 1.4, which IMO is unreasonably expensive for what you get.

I have both the 1.25x and the 1.4x. At all times, the 1.4x VF magnifier (previously 1.25x) stays on the camera as it is simply to annoying for me to take it out and put it back. 35mm works for me for both, and on the 1.4x VF, I use the entire edge of the RF frame and not the framelines as it is too wide. For 28mm and lower, I have to take it out. Another way is to just use the 21-14-28 external VF if I need to use wide lenses. It is still easier than to unhook the chain, especially with the strap.
