M8 flash socket

My M8 was for 7 weeks in Solms due to a nasty banding problem. I got it back (they nicely replaced the top plate for free that was used defending myself against a robber...), tried it out and noticed that in stead of green and red stripes, I now have (in some pictures above iso 640) a grey stripe in some pictures. As I didn't want to send it back again (and loose it for another 2 months), I decided to live with it.

Today, however, I noticed I can't use a flash on top of the camera. The flash simply doesn't fire anymore. What is even more annoying is that my Interfit flash transmitter doesn't fire anymore from the socket. Goodbye studio light photography with the M8

Does anybody had the same problem? I can't find any thread about this and am afraid that in Solms somebody touched a wrong button or wire..

I have to admit that I am loosing my patience with Leica. I read too many posts of people that send their camera in and get it back with another problem or even with the original problem not being fixed. As I need my camera desperately, I am starting to think that I better get used to wearing a tank around my neck. Or just start using my M6 again (as I can't seperate from my nice glass) and only use the M8 in perfect light conditions...

Good advice appreciated and a happy 2009.

My advice is not what you want to hear. I say send back to Leica. For me to lose another 2 months is better than keep a camera which malfunctions in ways that limits or prohibits your desired photography.

Send it back and ask for a loaner or demo camera until yours is fixed. They can take their time and get it right.

I had an Garmin Street Pilot fail with a burnt out lamp that lights the edge of the screen. Garmin would not offer parts or repair for my unit, only replacement with a rebuilt one.

Maybe factory rebuilt M8s would be a viable business model for Leica too.

Don, Luis, thanks for your replies. My guarantee runs till May, so I have some time to consider the option to send it in again.

The idea to wait 7 weeks, AGAIN.... Is the M8 aimed for professionals or not? If yes, the service should be way, way faster. Here in Portugal I will not get a replacement, so I will be just without it. A less centralistic organization of their service might be the answer to solve that problem.

Is it normal that people get their camera back with a new problem? I really hope that the 'success' of the M8 didn't provoke Leica to hire unqualified workers to deal with our camera's.

I understand that a camera can malfunction. I just can't accept the way our favorite brand is dealing with it. At the end a camera is a tool to create a photograph. And not a jewel that is just meant to be beautiful ..

My understanding at least in NA is Leica has a programme for professionals. However I do not qualify for it, so like you I am stuck with service times much longer than even amateurs get from Nikon or Canon. Then also, I have never needed service from Nikon or Canon, but with Leica yes, and rather often come to think.
