JHAG Posted November 6, 2008 Share #1 Posted November 6, 2008 Advertisement (gone after registration) Dear Fellows of the Leica Forum, This post is a bit unusual, I'll admit it, but as you're the most senior company of photographers I'm sharing with, I wished to submit to you the putative names of my new website. This website will be on-line next January. Meanwhile, if you wish, you could help chosing its name. Here the list : 1. Hel-Stampes 2. JFHG 2. JFHG-Stampes Votes and comments are most welcome. andybarton Posted November 6, 2008 Share #3 Posted November 6, 2008 What does "Stampes" mean in your native tongue?
JHAG Posted November 6, 2008 Author Share #4 Posted November 6, 2008 Nice to have already answers. @ jaapv : the website will be threefold : photography, interviews and my own texts. So I deliberately don't want a title relating to photo, litterature or screenplays. @ andy : nothing, my invention. It's a game around the french word "estampes", which means engraving, print, and the english "stamp", which means in french "imprint", but also the "mark". JFHG are, obviously, my initials. wparsonsgisnet Posted November 6, 2008 Share #5 Posted November 6, 2008 Johan, I like the first for the meanings of your name and the meanings of "imprint"
John Thawley Posted November 6, 2008 Share #6 Posted November 6, 2008 Having had the good fortune of selling domain names for high 5 figure prices, I can offer a couple of tips. A domain name doesn't always need to be "relevant" to what you or it does. In other words, people remember buzzme.com or google.com or amazon.com etc.etc. It's all about what they hear and how they remember. Keep the name aurally friendly - most spreading of your name will be spoken so make it phonetically simple without any sort of trick spelling or hyphens. You DO NOT want to have any explanation involved. I had a client introduce a software product called Xpressway and wanted a to do something on the website that was "direct" to the product... they were going to do a big radio promotion. LOL FIrst thing out of my mouth... "how are you spelling it?" - Second question... "so with these radio announcements, how will people know?" See what I mean? It needed explaining. Trust me.... my company site is c2group.com - I clarify "numeric 2" every time I give my email address. It's a pain. Unfortunately, I've had it since 1994 before I knew better. It's all about what people HEAR and REMEMBER. So, maybe just your name is in order? or yournamephoto.com JT
JHAG Posted November 6, 2008 Author Share #7 Posted November 6, 2008 Advertisement (gone after registration) @ william : thanks, noted and registered. @ thawley : John, my name is impossibly long and complicated, so forget it for a www. However, it will be there on page 2. Reason of this shortlist (there are other parameters I won't bother you with) PS : Congrats for the domain you sold. I had tried to register Obama.org, but it's already taken. Made a whois. Wonder who is this guy.
Overgaard Posted November 7, 2008 Share #8 Posted November 7, 2008 With the explanation of the word, I like JFHG-Stampes But perhaps jfhg.fr would be easiest to remember and use, and then call the universe JFHG-Stampes Agree with that domain names does not have to reveal the content (that was old school and how it was done in the 90ties). Amazon, Apple, cnn, crumpler, lacie, etc. doesn't reveal any content. Most traffic anyways come in via Google, so the domain name is never a directory pointer to what's in there. Just has to be easy to remember and type. A friend choose hlmc.dk which is the first letters in their names; oldest members of the family first which make it easy to type even you can't remember it. Looking forward to seeing it.
mhoersch Posted November 7, 2008 Share #9 Posted November 7, 2008 I suggest you either use your name, or part of it, or just Stampes. Nobody knows what that means, but it's easy to remember. It may be obvious to you that JFHG is your name, but I have forgotten it by the the time the "Reply to Thread" window has opened, and it seems phonetically somewhat awkward. www.stampes.domain looks fine to me. stuny Posted November 7, 2008 Share #10 Posted November 7, 2008 Johan - John's experience and suggestions are on target, especially for commercial sites. I'm assuming that your site will be no more commercial than mine -- Just a place to express yourself. If so, word-of-mouth is not that important. Given that, JFHG-Stampes gets my vote, though you will still need to write it on the back of your business card when you tell people about it because of the letters, order and hyphen. BTW: During its developmetn I'll be glad to run a usability expert reveiw on your site and provide you with the results.

I must confess this website is a bit more ambitious than that, being related to some pictures commissions from people in the US and the UE. Plus it will also showcase some of my partners in publishing companies. So it will also have an advertisement/professional function. PS : You'll have PM. PS 2 : I'm not Barack Obama, but I approve your message.
JHAG Posted November 7, 2008 Author Share #12 Posted November 7, 2008 Manfred, I really need the JFHG for business reasons. It seems the balance tilts towards JFHG-Stampes. No vote for Hel-Stampes ? Thorsten, thank you for your long and interesting reply. On your website, when I click on some items - namely for instance your Clinton blog, (I get an 404 error), or the Roger Moore link ("cannot be found on this website"), or even the seemingly moving and wonderful pic of Kennedy with Sorensen, which is broken. Why is that ? It's a pity, because your pages are so rich.
Overgaard Posted November 7, 2008 Share #13 Posted November 7, 2008 Sthan, The link to Roger More, Clinton, etc. is broken because Uber.com closed down during the Wall Street fuzz, so we're a lot of people who are homeless as far as blogs and galleries goes. There was some weeks where it seemed it might come back, but now it's gone forever. I got backup and will eventually get to recreate it in some fashion. Till then, we're some photographers blogging at APhotoContributor
JHAG Posted November 8, 2008 Author Share #14 Posted November 8, 2008 Thorsten, I prefer your website ! You have some lovely natural portraits there. Nightclubbing never been my cut of tea.
Overgaard Posted November 8, 2008 Share #15 Posted November 8, 2008 Agree, but Chris Weeks is one of the bloggers and happen to spend quite some evenings and nights shooting for nightclubs in Las Vegas ;-)
