batmobile Posted October 3, 2006 Share #1 Posted October 3, 2006 Advertisement (gone after registration) Hi, Just thought I would introduce myself! I have just purchased a Leica MP Black Paint along with a used 90 Elmarit-M and a few ZM lenses. Its all in the post now so dying with anticipation...finger nails getting shorter as we speak...... I shoot film and deteste digital, which is surprising considering I was born after 1970. Must make me an infant among Leica users, right? I had no interest whatsoever in the M7. Maybe I am nuts, I dunno. Did not like the idea of AE and more chippery inside, and fewer speeds if the battery goes dead. The M7 just seems miles taller too which clearly shows that my objectivity has gone out the window - I mean it is only 2.5mm... I will be using the MP for travel and street photography, which becomes especially appealing after prolonged bouts of LF landscape shooting! I did not buy a leica because I thought it would impart a special quality to my images but simply because the mechanical reliabilty and simplicity would be liberating compared to the constant fight against 'mind of their own' SLRs, especially when opportunities are fleeting. I hope that the simplicity will allow me to be be enveloped by the photographic mood at the time rather than keep dragging me out to attend to 'camera issues'. I have recently rediscovered this benefit with my RF645 (previously owned a lovely Rolleicard Va - loved the simplicity but hated the ergonomics) which is incredible in all regards, but it lacks the long /fast lenses and is that bit bigger than I would like for bare bones street roaming. I am hoping that I will be able to neatly conceal my M lenses in pockets or in belt pouches under outer garments. Certainly beats walking about with a camera bag over the shoulder. I will post images when I have some worth posting! Might be a while as I am 4000 miles from my scanner at present. B

atournas Posted October 3, 2006 Share #5 Posted October 3, 2006 Hi, I bought an M7 just when it came out (I was already using a classic M6). Within a month I returned it to the shop. The camera was a dream machine, but its implied automation and battery dependence was killing me. Now I own an MP and that brought peace back to my soul. frc Posted October 5, 2006 Share #8 Posted October 5, 2006 Hi batmobile, About two amd a half year ago I faced the same choice. Aperture priority or revised mechanical perfection. The latter won, Still no regrets about the decision. Somehow the M7 gave me the impression of being only halfway somewhere, I didn't realize halfway where. Since most of the work I do requires color, I'm constantly put up with a colour slide film loaded camera. B&W work has been almost nil. Although I am a member of the film generation doing their own printing, scanning and PS retouching drives me mad these days. You've guesed my workflow for quantity in on the computer. My sollution: digital M8. There'll be an even faster workflow for colour and the MP can and will be dedicated to B&W. When I bought my camera I was equallly excited about my purchase as you are, and the excitement stayed. Looking foreward to the M8, enjoy your new camera. welcome to the forum, Fr. grober Posted October 6, 2006 Share #9 Posted October 6, 2006 Two M3s, (1) M4-P, (2) M6s and one M7 later, I can't shake the Leica bug. I'll always respect the film tradition -- and have kept ONE film body so I can shoot in this media -- but the M8's time is finally here. If the new digital-M system lives up to even half it's potential, that'll still be more than I can effectively use over at least the next six months. Yes, each media is special and each has its own peculiar dragons which must be mastered. (The only free lunch is down at the soup kitchen.) Welcome to the family, B. -g

I believe you sold the M7 on eBay.
grober Posted October 6, 2006 Share #11 Posted October 6, 2006 I would be interested to know which one you kept out of that collection? I believe you sold the M7 on eBay. Ravi, My list of owned Leica M-bodies represents a forty year series of transitions as each new model arrived on the scene. I have now sold all my Leica bodies in preparation for the M8. At one time I had three of the already mentioned Leicas in service; now I "do" film only with a new Bessa R2M and old, but still usable Pentax SLR (only for occasional macro and long tele.). I also flirted with the Bessa L along the way with 15mm and 28mm lenses but got rid of both Ls when each film advance failed just after the warranty expired. If the R2M suffers the same fate, I'll swear off the Bessa forever and seek a clean M6 classic as my "final" film camera. -g
