Advertisement Posted September 25, 2008 Posted September 25, 2008 Hi JHAG, Take a look here Should I up-date the firmware?. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
Jamie Roberts Posted September 25, 2008 Share #22  Posted September 25, 2008 It is very simple for me; Never change a running system. Besides I don't need auto-anything . This is a M camera. not a DSLR.  Rudy  Yes, well, I hate to break it to you but all computers need upgrading, M mechanical heritage or not.  But I'm happy for you that your M8 likes whatever level of firmware you have it on, and that you can easily manually control 3 or more areas of extreme brightness change without missing a step or a shot  Mine hated the last level of firmware. If I could have found the previous, non-WB-fixed version, I would have down graded (who needs AWB?! This is an M camera! LOL!!)  Anyway, for those of you who shoot a lot and would like better I/O on the M8, the newest firmware is very very much improved. If you're not shooting as much as some of us, of course, you may never notice the difference. If you don't have to pull the battery every 300 shots, you may never notice.  PS--for whatever its worth to us non-purists shooting digital (!), Leica really did Auto ISO right, guys--it's really very worthwhile.  So I still shoot manually, but now don't have to "change film" as much

No wonder nobody ever made any decent photography before there was digital and auto-ISO
canlogic Posted September 25, 2008 Share #24 Â Posted September 25, 2008 Mine got bricked with the 2.0 firmware and I know I did the update as it was supposed to be done. I believe it was a fluke though and if I had a second camera I would update it. I thought at first I should have waited to see if there were any problems but I haven't had a problem with any previous update and hadn't had any problems with the camera till that point. keithhl Posted September 25, 2008 Share #25 Â Posted September 25, 2008 Can somebody plese tell me whether the 2.0 firmware still allows me to set my own ISO. I don't want auto ISO. I have (I admit with shame) never updated the firmware since buying the camera a year ago. If I now update to 2.0 and don't use the auto ISO what will be the other advantages? Â Thank you, Keith
SJP Posted September 25, 2008 Share #26 Â Posted September 25, 2008 Yes you can still set ISO manually as before - auto-ISO is there for you to use if you want to, but there is no obligation. The other main advantage is that you can use SD and SDHC cards. SD is becoming less easy to get and will become problematic sometime (think buying an extra card during a holiday at the local computer/camera store). I am very happy and I didn’t even read the manual
fotografr Posted September 26, 2008 Share #28  Posted September 26, 2008 This update and the previous one worked perfectly for me.I noticed that with the last firmware, all my subjects now have a moustache. Wonder why…  It's a well known issue. Your camera will have to go back to Solms.
Photoskeptic Posted September 26, 2008 Share #29 Â Posted September 26, 2008 The update doesn't address anything that interests me. I don't need what they updated and I ain't buying.
Jamie Roberts Posted September 26, 2008 Share #30  Posted September 26, 2008 Yikes, that sounds terrifying! No wonder nobody ever made any decent photography before there was digital and auto-ISO  You mean with that thing with 5 stops of latitude on either side of good exposure called black and white film? Now that was for idiots  Everyone I know who shoots those conditions in digital mostly misses shots. Those changes are well out of the range of human reaction time if you want to maintain an aperture and shutter... sorry. And I have other things to worry about at the time than "changing film".  So of course, it's not that people didn't get good shots with film. It's that they didn't even try when they couldn't get the shot.  I'll stand by what I said. This is a real boon for event pros working quickly in rapidly and drastically changing light (and my M film cameras only have 1/1000s too--I guess that's ok if you want to move between f11 and f2... I usually don't  And having auto ISO doesn't mean you have to use it, either. Just turn it off and manually change.  The bottom line is that the firmware is still better for other reaons... mostly computational
petermcwerner Posted September 26, 2008 Share #31  Posted September 26, 2008 I am about to up-date my firmware, but has anyone had any problems with the new firmware? Thanks  If you go to Downloads->Software and Firmwareupdates you only see 1.201  Welcome, dear visitor! As registered member you'd see an image here… Simply register for free here – We are always happy to welcome new members!  You have to go to Downloads->Rangefinder Cameras->M8 to see 2.00.  I accidentally first installed 1.201 and was wondering why the Auto-Iso did not show...
