nrj Posted October 2, 2006 Share #1 Posted October 2, 2006 Advertisement (gone after registration) One attraction of the R-D1 to me is that the display can be turned round so the screen is protected during shooting. Does anyone have any information on how scratch resistant the M8 display is? have those who've handled it seen any screen issues? Thanks Nik
Advertisement Posted October 2, 2006 Posted October 2, 2006 Hi nrj, Take a look here M8 display. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
Michael-IIIf Posted October 2, 2006 Share #2 Posted October 2, 2006 I haven't seen one in the flesh yet, so can't comment on the scratch resistance. But for my two cents' worth I'm glad it doesn't rotate. Less to go wrong, more minimal, more Leica. Michael
marknorton Posted October 2, 2006 Share #3 Posted October 2, 2006 I think it's made of glass from my brief handling of the camera but there's no provision for a clip on protector like you get with a Nikon. If it's prone to scratching, I'm sure there will be the stick-on plastic protectors...
gravastar Posted October 2, 2006 Share #4 Posted October 2, 2006 If scratched screens become a problem I'm sure these people would produce a custom size protector ScreenPatronus , see also US patent 5,132,588 I use their protectors on Canon 5D and Epson R-D1 cameras and find them to be excellent. The protector is very tough, easily cleaned and does not use adhesives, it relies on molecular adhesion to stay in place. Bob.
sean_reid Posted October 2, 2006 Share #5 Posted October 2, 2006 It's no more or less prone to scratching than most LCD screens. I may use a protector on mine. Cheers, Sean
Guest guy_mancuso Posted October 2, 2006 Share #6 Posted October 2, 2006 I would safely assume it is the same as the DMR since they probably used the same vendor. Scratching has not been a issue there , but nose grease certainly is there. I carry a leica cleaning cloth with me and clean often.
Rona!d Posted October 2, 2006 Share #7 Posted October 2, 2006 Advertisement (gone after registration) I don´t use any protectors and had no trouble after some weeks of use. In case of some scratches i use the polishing paste I also use for my pilot-watches and cellphone-displays once a year. I never used protectors and polishing paste on any of my EOS-cameras and they are working fine.
wparsonsgisnet Posted October 2, 2006 Share #8 Posted October 2, 2006 I would safely assume it is the same as the DMR since they probably used the same vendor. Scratching has not been a issue there , but nose grease certainly is there. I carry a leica cleaning cloth with me and clean often. I am glad to hear this good news about the DMR. I have been using the D2 without a screen protector for almost 3 years now with no ill effects. I, too, notice the nose (and finger) oil. Do you suppose Leica intended for our facial and hand oils to serve as a natural and organic screen protector?
grober Posted October 2, 2006 Share #9 Posted October 2, 2006 I'm hoping my Leica dealer has a screen protector available so I can afix one immediately and never use the M8 without one. Seems only logical to protect this critical component of so major an investment. Then there's all the other add-ons I'll also need to buy for this new Leica: Leica Handgrip, additional SD card, extra M8 battery, more hard disk storage for my PhotoShop computer, etc., etc. I expect we'll end up considerably north of $5K, eh? Guest guy_mancuso Posted October 2, 2006 Share #10 Posted October 2, 2006 Bill it must be they want our DNA on it in case stolen Actually you can use some of those protector films that you would use on a PDA device if you wanted to go that direction to protect it, nose grease is a little better with them for some reason. But even looking at my oldest DMR which was August last year it is still in pristine condition, just a soft cloth is something that should be in the bag. I would also imagine the warranty would cover this also, we will have to see but leica service at least for me has been outstanding and fast. Not everyone has that same experience but they fixed my knob on my DMR in a week and had 3 lenses sent in for ROM and they were back within two weeks and also they looked brand new. leica on a Rom conversion not only does the Rom it gets calibrated and they do a clean , lube and adjust as part of the price. rvaubel Posted October 2, 2006 Share #11 Posted October 2, 2006 I'm hoping my Leica dealer has a screen protector available so I can afix one immediately and never use the M8 without one. Seems only logical to protect this critical component of so major an investment. Why? I've never used screen protectors on any of my digital cameras and never been bothered by scratches. I'm pretty rough with my cameras but have yet to ever notice a scratch causing a viewing problem. In fact I don't even know if my LCD screens have scratches, I'll have to look.............lets see, if I look at just the right and if the screen is off,,,,,ya, maybe. I wouldn't get too upset Rex
Guest smep Posted October 2, 2006 Share #12 Posted October 2, 2006 Probably Leica has used Saphir-Glass like on my divers watch which is very scratch-resistant.
nrj Posted October 2, 2006 Author Share #13 Posted October 2, 2006 Thanks for the responses, its sounds like its not something to get worried about. I have had some bad experiences with PDA and mobile phone screens though. The non-glue protector sounds a great idea, I have lots of problems getting protectors on my PDA without bubbles under the protector. Guest guy_mancuso Posted October 2, 2006 Share #14 Posted October 2, 2006 Same here with the PDA but I believe they use a softer material because you have a active LCD that you press. camera LCD are hardened. I really would not worry about this to much but at any time you can put the prtection on. Also I know it sounds like a Leica thing but there cleaning cloth s really nice, I have 3 of them. One in the bag, office and use the other for sunglasses. Almost any cloth will do of course but i use it on my lenses also and it works great
nrj Posted October 4, 2006 Author Share #15 Posted October 4, 2006 Guy thanks for the tip about the leica cloths - I didn't know they made them Nik
Guest guy_mancuso Posted October 4, 2006 Share #16 Posted October 4, 2006 Try B&H http://www.bhphotovideo.com/bnh/controller/home?O=productlist&A=details&Q=&sku=274381&is=REG&addedTroughType=search Better order them now folks , they will go quickly. mfunnell Posted October 5, 2006 Share #17 Posted October 5, 2006 I don't know about the M8 (having, of course, never seen one) but I do know that the actual LCD on the back of my Canon dSLR is behind a protector that's a relatively cheaply ordered part from Canon. So, what people are often really applying is a protector for their LCD protector, not the LCD itself. (Note also that my pocket digicam's screen is not behind a protector.) ...Mike
timwalker Posted April 25, 2007 Share #18 Posted April 25, 2007 I know opinions vary regarding using cases, but my concern about this issue resulted in buying a Luigi M8 case and I'm pretty happy with it. I keep the protector snapped over the LCD during most of my shooting as I don't tend to review exposures after each shot. So far it's protected the screen really well and I tend to not baby the camera as much while carrying it around for fear scratching the screen. It adds a nice extra gripability to the camera as well. thpeters Posted April 25, 2007 Share #19 Posted April 25, 2007 From Guy Mancuso, we will have to see but leica service at least for me has been outstanding and fast. Philinflash Posted April 25, 2007 Share #20 Posted April 25, 2007 I use the polishing paste I also use for my pilot-watches and cellphone-displays once a year. Toothpaste also works.
