Some More M8 Thoughts

It seems to be made of hard rubber or a slightly flexible plastic like polypropyene and is tethered to the camera at the bottom. Looked fine to me.

Agreed, in practice, it's a non-issue. Not sure why that cover has gotten so much attention on forums. It's just fine as is.

Next time (M9) put the frame counter (and battery indicater) bubble on the right, where it belongs like all the other M's. Then put the ISO and EV settings on the left, where the remaining frame bubble currently resides.

As long as I can see the ISO & EV without resorting to menus, I'm happy.

Next time...? I didn't design the camera. <G>

1. I don't see any possibility of showing the EV and ISO on the existing display. An LCD like this doesn't have a dot matrix on which you can display anything you like, but a limited 3 digit 7 segments per digit display with additional custom segments for the battery indicator. As such, it will be impossible to display a 4 digit ISO or a +/- EV in units of 0.5 EV.

2. You can already use the set button to show the settings on the main LCD and if they do go for the arrow buttons, the LCD should display the new setting while you are using the up/down/dial to adjust the setting.

1. Right, it's too late for this change.

2. Right, the LCD would show the settings as one pressed right arrow for ISO or left arrow for EV followed by the up or down arrows for value changes. Set, again, would only require a light shutter press (to the first active position).

Press cameras are normally available well in advance of cameras in stores. The idea, naturally, is to have the cameras available when those reviews are published. That works out more for a print publication, though. I'm not privy to any special information about delivery dates other than the end of Nov. Review cameras are on a different schedule.

Revised info. Spoke with Leica today and review camera samples won't be available until after October 15th. That may be disappointing, I realize, but keep in mind that Leica has said the camera will be available (in the USA) in late November. Some rumors I've read on the web have suggested an earlier date for cameras in shops but Leica is not responsible for the rumor mill's schedule. <G> Official delivery is still end of Nov.

I for one would willingly give up the "remaining frame counter" function on the left-side bubble. Replace it with ISO.

I could live with EV in the Set area, but would really like ISO to be visible.

I think many of us would like to see EV and ISO displayed on a top LCD, perhaps down the road...

I am rather impressed. That's a ton of ISO switching around during one shooting session. Of course perhaps Winogrand would have loved to use this model.

Hi Albert,

Actually, a lot of photographers switch ISO that often.

Like I said above, put them together in a cute little bubble like the M8 has for the frame counter/battery. It would still look very retro in a Leica kinda way.

aesthetics are important in these things

My gosh, I'm glad this thread exists, with at least the hint of a possibility that Leica is/might/will be listening.

Can't believe they'd design this camera without qiuck ISO and EV functionality, and I applaud Sean's initiative here.

As someone who will almost certainly be a customer for this camera, and who is currently a pretty active DSLR pro, I can say I am just about constantly monitoring and adjusting both ISO and EV.

Leica, Please, OH PLEASE make these functions readily, simply available for quick manipulation! And thanks for making my next camera.

Well folks, its too late for any hardware upgrades. No bubble windows with ISO and EV. Maybe next model. But the camera is pretty darn good the way it is. I'm #5 on Calumets list amd I am ready to rock and roll!!

It's a superb camera, no question, and I'm buying one myself. But the firmware changes would make it better so I'll keep pushing for them. Again, if you are reading this thread and would value faster access to ISO and EV controls, please chime in. Details of the firmware ideas are summarized above and discussed in detail in the review.

Actually, Sean they are responsible, as the counter staff at the Photokina were telling customers that they would start shipping "within one or two weeks" with "the formal start of delivery in late November" Actually they suggested that I would contact my supplier to get the camera "a lot earlier".

Well, I guess we'll see what happens then. What country do you live in?

Sean I keep hearing mid October also, i wonder and I am just wondering . If all the preorders are shipping out at this time because each dealer had to give them a number of pre orders . I know this from my dealer. Than after the initial preoders they will start shipping the rest. Now that maybe only a couple units for each store in the initial release than follow that up. Canon has done this also and send out 1000 units across the country than 2 weeks later done the same thing. I have llived through this 3 times as a prorder situation. DMR , 1dsMKII, 1dMKII and both companies did almost exactly the same thing. Now I am completely speculating here so don't shoot the messenger but this is sounding familiar

re firmware idea...(thinking that the easier it is the more likely it is to happen soon)

since the SET button already brings up the correct menu, can't you already control these items with out looking? sort of like ISO on the R-D1? just know how many clicks down each line item is, and then adjust using the arrow keys?

It means extra clicks, perhaps, but that way you get access to all of the commonly adjusted items (ISO and EV for everyone, and WB for the JPEG shooters, and whatever else is on that menu for everyone.

Perhaps all that is needed is a way to reorder the menu, to put the ones you want most at the top, like I can do with my cell phone?

Am I missing something on how the SET button works now?
