jrgeoffrion Posted September 28, 2006 Share #1 Posted September 28, 2006 Advertisement (gone after registration) Two DNGs from the M8 at Photokina are available from Fichiers DNG issus du Leica M8 à la Photokina - Blog Lightmediation To me, the image looks just like the DMR except for [maybe] less noise. Please note that the phone is out of focus on the second image.
Advertisement Posted September 28, 2006 Posted September 28, 2006 Hi jrgeoffrion, Take a look here M8 DNG Available. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
pascal_meheut Posted September 28, 2006 Share #2 Posted September 28, 2006 Thanks, looks ok for me. So 320 ISO is noise free (for me at least) and 640 ISO is quite useable too. I can live with that.
robsteve Posted September 28, 2006 Share #3 Posted September 28, 2006 The DNG will not open in my version of Photoshop CS2, but the Lightroom B4 had no problems opening the file. Is there any info on which lens was used to shoot it?
sean_reid Posted September 28, 2006 Share #4 Posted September 28, 2006 Hmmm....so how does the song go? I don't want to set the world on fire I just want to start a little smoke I imagine this may be a busy thread. <G> Cheers, Sean

Is there any info on which lens was used to shoot it? If you're having trouble opening it in CS2 you may have to update the latest version of camera raw (it was updated less than a week ago). I can open the file with the latest update. It appears that the lens used wasn't coded and hence not recorded in the file. It says the maximum aperture is f/1.0, but I don't know if that means it was a Noctilux or that's just the default setting when a non-coded lens is used. pascal_meheut Posted September 28, 2006 Share #6 Posted September 28, 2006 Or rather download a trial version of Capture One 3.7.5. Because I tried it as well as CS2 and this is exactly like the DMR: much better colors with C1.

sean_reid Posted September 28, 2006 Share #8 Posted September 28, 2006 Leica worked closely with C1 for support of the M8 and that is the program which is bundled with the camera. I'll let people draw their own conclusions from there. Cheers, Sean
albertwang Posted September 28, 2006 Share #9 Posted September 28, 2006 So what do people here think of the color rendition, contrast, and tweakability based on this file?
jrgeoffrion Posted September 28, 2006 Author Share #10 Posted September 28, 2006 Or rather download a trial version of Capture One 3.7.5. Because I tried it as well as CS2 and this is exactly like the DMR: much better colors with C1. Pascal is right, the image quality if FAR superior with CaptureOne than ACR. ACR has its typical magenta cast to it. In addition, the internal curve of ACR is somewhat more contrasty, resulting in a lot less details in the highlights (using the linear curve). CaptureOne is also much sharper (IMHO) -- like it is with most RAW files.
jrgeoffrion Posted September 28, 2006 Author Share #11 Posted September 28, 2006 So what do people here think of the color rendition, contrast, and tweakability based on this file? The M8 file looks like it has the exact same quality as a DMR file to me.
gravastar Posted September 28, 2006 Share #12 Posted September 28, 2006 I've opened the files in Adobe Camera RAW and C1. To my eyes the C1 images have noticeably less noise than the Adobe ones, that's even with both noise reduction sliders set to zero in C1 . .... very interesting. Bob. But still, what a way to evaluate a camera. But with no other images, the temptation is too great. Rex

kidigital Posted September 28, 2006 Share #15 Posted September 28, 2006 Everyday, I'm even more glad I put my name on the M8 list 6 months ago. I'll paraphrase and read between the lines of Sean's earlier quote: smokin'

Guest guy_mancuso Posted September 28, 2006 Share #17 Posted September 28, 2006 Well put me on the it looks like a DMR file . Now where is the bank Looks very nice in C1
rvaubel Posted September 28, 2006 Share #18 Posted September 28, 2006 Even though I promised to keep my mouth shut, the temptation is too great. Interesting observation *The EXIF file indicates that the girl picture was taken with a lens of maximum aperture F1.0 The DOF is rather narrow, but probably more like F2.0 This is a good picture for evaluating sharpness as the plane of focus is at an angle to the camera. Shutter speed is high which is also good for sharpness. This picture is damn sharp. Look at the eyebrow. We are talking pixel by pixel sharpness. *Thank God this is a DNG file. This fact eliminates so many variables. *My copy of CS2 does a very good job with the default settings. I don't know about C1, but I will download the trial version and find out. *This file is actually pretty useful but I still think Leica should release some of their own files. *I have to do some actual work. My employees must think I am on a porno site.....in a way, I am (self gratification of the worst kind) Rex
rosuna Posted September 28, 2006 Share #19 Posted September 28, 2006 Does Aperture 1.5 support the Leica M8 or DNG files? Leica will provide Capture One LE 3.7.5. or 4.0 (it has been just presented)?
