Latecomer Posted August 17, 2008 Share #1 Posted August 17, 2008 Advertisement (gone after registration) I have searched for threads addressing this problem but without success. Can anyone point me in the right direction? After a successful day shooting yesterday I turned on my M8 late last night and saw the message "SD Card Full". I knew this couldn't be correct but unsuccessfully tried to format the card anyway. Battery condition was half and shots remaining zero. I have tried replacing the battery with one known to be full, but get the same indications. I have tried another card without success. Both cards work perfectly well in my Digilux 2. At the moment I have the battery and card out of the camera in the hope that a reset will take place when the internal battery runs down. While I wait for this to happen (and how will I know it has?) does anyone have any helpful ideas? John
Advertisement Posted August 17, 2008 Posted August 17, 2008 Hi Latecomer, Take a look here SD Card Full ... but it isn't!. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
chris_tribble Posted August 17, 2008 Share #2 Posted August 17, 2008 What card are you using? Formatting the card in camera should solve the problem.
Latecomer Posted August 17, 2008 Author Share #3 Posted August 17, 2008 Chris I am using 2Gb Sandisk Extreme III cards. I can't format them, or at least the format program only runs for 2 or 3 seconds and then I still have the SD card full message, and "FULL" in the viewfinder if I try to make an exposure. This has just happened - I have been using the same setup for months. John
gfspencer Posted August 17, 2008 Share #4 Posted August 17, 2008 Are you formatting in the camera?
Shootist Posted August 17, 2008 Share #5 Posted August 17, 2008 Chris I am using 2Gb Sandisk Extreme III cards. This has just happened - I have been using the same setup for months. John Take the card out of the camera and format it on a computer. If it still reads full make sure the Lock lever isn't engaged. There have been more reports of problems with SanDisc cards then any other. Persoanlly I don't use any SanDisc cards. I use Lexar and never had a problem in any camera or other device. Latecomer Posted August 18, 2008 Author Share #6 Posted August 18, 2008 This isn't a card problem. I have tried three different Sandisk cards and an Apacer. Same result with all four. None of them were locked. All of them work in my Digilux 2. I still have the camera sitting with the battery out in he hope that it will reset. Can anyone advise on this? Latecomer Posted August 18, 2008 Author Share #8 Posted August 18, 2008 Thanks shootist. Do you have any suggestions as to how I might clean the internal contacts without damaging anything? John
Shootist Posted August 18, 2008 Share #9 Posted August 18, 2008 Thanks shootist. Do you have any suggestions as to how I might clean the internal contacts without damaging anything? John Spray contact clean. Spray it on a card and insert the card a few times. If that doesn't fix it then it looks like a trip to Leica is in order. Latecomer Posted August 19, 2008 Author Share #10 Posted August 19, 2008 Thanks for your help Shootist. I am waiting a week for the internal battery to run out in the hope the reset will fix the problem. Otherwise, as you say, it seems the camera is in for a long journey. jaapv Posted August 19, 2008 Share #11 Posted August 19, 2008 I had exactly the same problem on my DMR. Dirty contacts...
agro Posted August 19, 2008 Share #12 Posted August 19, 2008 I had this issue a few times now. All I needed to do was: - remove the card - set the card lock lever to "Lock" position - card back into the camera - camera "on" and it shows "Locked" - naturally - remove card and unlock - card back into M8 ..and Bob's your uncle. Worked for me. Cheers Agro
Latecomer Posted August 20, 2008 Author Share #13 Posted August 20, 2008 Unfortunately it didn't work for me agro. I guess it's back to waiting for the camera to reset and hoping that will do the trick. John
aj55 Posted August 20, 2008 Share #14 Posted August 20, 2008 Isn't there any other way to reset the camera. Perhaps this is stupid, but re-installing the firmware (as if it were an update)?
gwelland Posted November 14, 2008 Share #15 Posted November 14, 2008 I had this problem with one of my San Disk Extreme III cards with my M8. No matter how I reformatted, nuked, scrubbed the card it would regularly lock up my M8 with exactly this error. In the end I gave up on the San Disk cards and settled on the Lexar's that have never let me down. Here's a strange phenomena: I put the same card into my M8.2 and reformatted it. It now works perfectly in both cameras - same firmware 2.0 in both. Go figure? Is it the phase of the moon or other strange forces at play? I offer no explanation ... just observation. wilfredo Posted November 14, 2008 Share #16 Posted November 14, 2008 I've been having the same problems. It never happened before the latest firmware update. I wonder if there is a connection and if a trip to Leica is warranted? Well, if it keeps up it's going to Leica. Latecomer Posted December 16, 2008 Author Share #17 Posted December 16, 2008 I tried all of the suggestions in the thread without avail. After waiting three months for the internal battery to go flat I gave up and the camera is now on its way to the Leica service centre in Hong Kong. does anyone have any experience of this organisation? thompsonkirk Posted March 28, 2011 Share #18 Posted March 28, 2011 Three years after the above posts: I just had the same problem in M9: regular reformatting didn't help, different card didn't help. Then I used the 'slow reformat,' the Overwrite one, on a small card (took several minutes). Then that card worked OK – & lo-&-behold, so did a 16 GB one. Either an impending electrical failure or a problem needing voodoo/exorcism. Kirk
misha Posted March 28, 2011 Share #19 Posted March 28, 2011 I've had this sporadic but really annoying problem on and off for 2+ years now. I had my m8 in Leica NJ several times and had them look into it. Each time they came back with the same verdict: as it didnt happen while they had the camera in NJ, there is nothing wrong if it, or that there isnt anything they can do. my verdict: m8 is a lot of great things but it is just not a reliable pro camera. misha PHOTOGRAPHY BY MISHA FRIEDMAN p.s. it is still my only camera

But then these cameras get used for this kind of shots...: http://www.l-camera-forum.com/leica-forum/people/173569-gulu-wamgulu-guy.html
