Hi Everyone! Sorry if this is in the wrong area. This is my first post so I'm a little confused at where everything goes!! I wanted to get my wife a birthday gift, but I wasn't sure which one. I don't know much about photography or cameras so I hope you guys can help me choose.

Right now she has a Canon 40D and also a Canon G9, I know she loves the Leica M8, but of course that is way out of our budget right now. So I was looking at the V-Lux 1, D-Lux 3 or the C-Lux 2. My budget is give or take around $1000.00. Any help would be highly appreciated!!

Thank you so much!!!

I'd get the C-Lux 2 -- very handy, pocketable, take-anywhere little camera. The V-Lux 3 is too close in size to the 40D she already has, and the D-Lux 3 is too similar in specs to the G9. Plus, with the money you save, you can buy her flowers every day for the rest of the year (probably)!:p

Hi, sorry I forgot about her camera needs. She likes an everyday camera that she can take around. I think she had the Canon SD1000, but it broke. I know that she is getting into Macro and she likes skyscrapers. She's not into take portraits. I hope that helps!

Thanks you guys!

If she likes skyscrapers, I recommend that she takes a look at the shots in the "Architecture" photo forum on this site for photos by "stuny". IIRC he uses a C-lux2 (or the Panasonic equiv.) as his every day camera and the shots are superb.

Welcome to the Forum. Though there are some limitations to the C-Lux-2, it seems ideal for the purpose you mention. As Brian kindly mentions above the C-Lux is quite good for skyscrapers, partly because the wide angle (35mm photography equivalent of 28mm) is rather wide for this class of camera, and that it can do some fairly good macro work, especially if you crop some in post processing. The C-Lux-2 (and its Panasonic equivalent) is so small that I can have it with me virtually all the time, which is not possible with any of my other cameras., and measures about 3 ¾ x 2 x 1 inch. You can see many skyscraper shots I took with it in the last few pages of the New York photo galleries on my site, and you can see its macro abilities in a number of underwater photos in the Borneo photo galleries on our site. Below is a photo of a tiny shrimp (less than one inch in total length) on a piece of soft coral. Don’t try this shot without an underwater enclosure for the camera.

You should also consider the Panasonic Lumix DMC-LX3 - more information here:

Panasonic Lumix DMC-LX3: Digital Photography Review

This is the latest upgrade of the Panasonic LX2 which is the equivalent of the Leica D-Lux 3. (These camera naming systems are confusing, aren't they!) We don't know yet whether Leica will market their own D-Lux 4 version. Even if they do, there is unlikely to be much difference except price.

The new camera has a wider lens (24mm equivalent), a hot shoe and, probably, better image quality.

Another vote for the C Lux (or Panasonic equivalent FX30). Very well made, lovely images, and so small you should carry it everywhere.

However, if you can wait a little while, it is possibly going to be replaced with a new model at Photokina (Panasonic have launched a number of new models featuring the same form and Leica lenses).

I just wanted to thank everyone for their great advice!! I'm really starting to look at the C-Lux. C-Lux is definitely something within my budget and it really is something more portable which can be carried around. Even if it's not for outside photography even if it's just a get together it can be a camera that can be for great use! I will definitely look at the Panasonic Lumix and compare and contrast. Thank you everyone for their wonderful advice!!

I know that she would love the wide. I know she has the wide lens for her Canon so I know that is something she would love.

BTW stuny you have some very amazing photographs!!

Thanks again everyone!:D:):D:)

Well, they are two very different cameras, really.

The C-Lux 2 is: compact (in your pocket you will hardly feel it's there), easy to use, has no manual controls but has some interesting scene modes, cannot save RAW files, has a probably inferior lens (but the image quality is still superb at normal sizes). It's a bright and breezy, "take anywhere with you" point and shoot.

The LX-3 is: not so compact (the lens protrudes so getting it into jeans is going to be a wee bit tight), can be easy to use if you go full auto but also has full manual controls, can save RAW files, can be expanded using accessories (viewfinder, filter, etc). Like the Canon G9 your wife already has, it's a more specialist image-making tool.

When I considered the C-Lux and the D-Lux (Leica equivalent of the LX-3's predecessor), I went for the D-Lux 3 because I didn't have any other digital camera at the time. But now that I also have a Digilux 2 and a Ricoh GR-D, I wish I had the C-Lux instead -- the 3 cameras complement each other because you'd use each for different purposes.

My two cents, anyway.

Hi Ruhayat,

Yea, I think I am going to go to the C-Lux. Mainly because it's something that fits into the pocket which is important and also like you said how those three cameras will just compliment each other. I think those were the words I was looking for.

I really appreciate your comments and everyone else's too!!

Thank you so much!:D
