Adrian Lord Posted August 10, 2008 Share #1 Posted August 10, 2008 Advertisement (gone after registration) Hi there, I don't quite know how I managed it but I have manged to jam the shutter and wind-on and tore a film in the process. Now I can't do anything with the camera. The torn film edge has scratched the shutter curtain just for good measure too. Have I done serious damage? Is this a dealer repair or can I unjam it myself? Thanks very much for any advice and help in advance. Adrian

jhild Posted August 10, 2008 Share #2 Posted August 10, 2008 Are you sure all film(parts) are out or are there still some in the camera somewhere? Can you move the film transport sprocket inside the camera after using the rewind lever? Can you wind on with the rewind lever down(it will automatically go back in the upright position when winding on)? How badly is the damage to the shutterblinds, take the lens off, open the back of the camera and look against a strong light with the shutter cocked and released(if it´s working again). If there is no answer to this questions or if the mechanics don´t start working again it´s a job for a professional, I know that´s bad news but that´s how it is... Adrian Lord Posted August 10, 2008 Author Share #3 Posted August 10, 2008 Hi Jo, Tried all of that - I'm taking it to the dealers, it is jammed solid. Thanks anyway, Adrian
mmradman Posted October 17, 2012 Share #4 Posted October 17, 2012 My MP film advance jammed tonight. I was testing empty camera mounted with 90mm AA when film advance jammed. Removing the lens advance worked. Next I put 50mm f1.4 and f2.8 and advance worked OK, finally i put 35mm f1.4 ASPH (Latest aka FLE) and it jammed solid. I guess next stop is service but did anyone experienced this before or can offer explanation. I didn't leave any film chips in the past and shutter curtain looks pristine. Thanks anyway, Adrian Google "Malcolm Taylor", an English guy who may fix it quicker than going through your dealer
Messsucherkamera Posted October 19, 2012 Share #6 Posted October 19, 2012 I had a similar incident with my MP a couple of years ago. I cannot recall the details of what happened, but I sent it to Sherry Krauter in NY (USA). She had it repaired and returned very promptly. Both Adrian and mmradman are in the UK so sending their MPs to the U.S. for repair may not be the best solution due to shipping issues. For M camera users in the U.S., Sherry Krauter can't be beat in terms of Leica repair.
honcho Posted October 20, 2012 Share #7 Posted October 20, 2012 Advertisement (gone after registration) I learnt long ago to take care when loading a film into my MP after experiencing a couple of jams. This happened only within the first half dozen frames, never at any other time. if a film jams, don't force the wind-on otherwise the film will tear at the sprocket holes and bits of film could find their way into the shutter and winding mechanisms, making the problem much worse. If the film will not rewind, open the back, take the film out then wind on carefully with the back open and the base removed to make sure there is no film debris in the shutter. When loading a film, make sure the leader is square in the take-up spool and the film edges are running parallel with the guide rails before closing the back and attaching the camera base.
mmradman Posted October 20, 2012 Share #8 Posted October 20, 2012 Thanks for your replies & thanks to moderator for placing this thread in the correct group. Camera was handed today to Stephens in Manchester for forwarding to their UK repairperson. I discovered frame advance jam with empty camera as i was exercising shutter, only week earlier I had last film removed and i never had film tear. It could be that there are some legacy film fragments as I bought camera S/H but used it without problem for almost two years. Interestingly at same time frame selector stopped responding

I have an MP on order, so would be grateful if you could keep me informed on how the repair progresses and the reason behind how your MP became jammed

Probably too late to go elsewhere but RW (forum sponsor) seem to have the black in stock.

Thank you for the link, Wattsy. I rang Stephens a couple of weeks ago and apparently it is "in production"........ Stephens have very generously loaned me an M6 ttl in the meantine, though I sometimes forget it isnt mine and that I have an MP on order. Regardless of MP's being in stock elsewhere, I will not cancel my order. Stephens' store is only a stones throw from where I do most of my shooting, so I'll pick it up in person, leave the box with Stephens, and go shoot! Before I ordered my MP, RW appeared to have one "in stock" on their website, but a phone call revealed this to not be the case, which deters me from trying them again. With hindsight, perhaps I would have saved £2k by buying an M6 ttl and having it CLA'ed, but then again I wanted a camera with no history and that I could bed in from new
