I thought this might make an interesting change from some of the gloom and doom that's been around... Let's see if there are 101 genuine reasons (and show the evidence). Here's my #1 - and it's one of my major reasons for making the investment.

REASON #1

An M8 can be with you all the time.

EVIDENCE - waiting for a bus near Hampstead Heath, London June 21 2008. The light changed. A young man in a red jacket ran between two buses. I had the camera with me...

REASON #2

It's the only currently-available digital rangefinder camera that allows me to use exquisite Leica M lenses. (I can't think of a way to demonstrate this without posting non-Leica pictures as comparison.)

REASON #3

The ability to shoot bona fide digital infrared pictures. (YMMV)

EVIDENCE: Clouds above Farthing Downs.

It allows me to carry on shooting in nearly all light conditions without having to change film, thanks to ISO changing combined with M lenses that are superb in low light.

Evidence- during a professional workshop I was only allowed out when the light was going fast, and still able to get the shot.

REASON #5

Vignetting - and distorsion free lenses combined with easy manual operation (no fiddling to shut off automatics) as well as a small packages make for great Panorama opportunities in difficult conditions.

(Jungle on Rinjani Volcano, Lombok Island, Indonesia, WATE on 21 mm plus UV/IR. Light Gitzo tripod with nodal point setup. 150 degree sweep. The detail at 100% is unbelievable)

Reason #8

It lets me shoot a guitar craftsman discretely, without flash, and without causing him to put a bl**dy-great gouge in what will eventually be a fine instrument.

Reason #9 - It doesn't frighten people (and the image quality is as good as or better than the DSLR with the big lens you didn't use)

Unknown woman and her dog - 35mm Summicron v4. Hampstead Heath, London (and I'm putting this one in to the National Portrait Gallery photographic competition this year...)
