ampm99 Posted September 16, 2006 Share #1 Posted September 16, 2006 Advertisement (gone after registration) When my dad passed away a few years ago I inherited a 1938 Leica rangefinder and 2 lenses. He "liberated" the camera from a German officer during WWII in Italy where he served in aerial reconaisance. These cameras were actively used through 1980 or so. I live near San francisco CA. Is there a reliable , quality place to restore these gems. They may be worth a lot of money but they are priceless personal memories to me Any Reference would be appreciated Thanks
Advertisement Posted September 16, 2006 Posted September 16, 2006 Hi ampm99, Take a look here Where can I restore/repair my dad's 1938 Leica. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
Dan States Posted September 16, 2006 Share #2 Posted September 16, 2006 The best I've found is Don Goldberg at DAG Camera Parts You can't go wrong with him. He has done 3 cameras for me over the years with great results every time. Best wishes Dan
twom4 Posted September 17, 2006 Share #3 Posted September 17, 2006 I second Dan's comment on Don. Go for it!!!
flashover Posted September 18, 2006 Share #4 Posted September 18, 2006 Yes DAG is a good choice. I have bought parts for both of my III's (a) & ©. Ailthough I have not had service work done there I have only heard good comments. Oh I am new here but not to RF's or Leica I have had a couple of them. Lucklik Posted September 18, 2006 Share #5 Posted September 18, 2006 When my dad passed away a few years ago I inherited a 1938 Leica rangefinder and 2 lenses. I also in herited a 1938 Leica (IIIa with Summar 50mm) from my father. My father got it from his uncle. The IIIa had a CLA and I use it from time to time. rgs Luc
ampm99 Posted September 18, 2006 Author Share #6 Posted September 18, 2006 Thankyou for the replies. I found through other web sources the following (also highly recommended) repair site. Sherry Krauter.com -- Home of the Golden Touch. I talked with Sherry over the phone. She helped me inspect the camera, check the lense, and check the shutter(s). She determined by serial number that my Leica was built in 1935. I feel very good about sending the camera to her for sanity check and/or repair. She wanted me to understand the eccentricities of cameras built in 1935. This is not your easy point and shoot. It is, however, a great classic camera. In the same way people restore classic cars, this one deserves a new life.
flashover Posted September 19, 2006 Share #7 Posted September 19, 2006 Advertisement (gone after registration) you can date your camera and lenses from the serial numbers. Mine is a IIIa 1936 production and my Summitar is a 1942 vintage.
