sean_reid Posted September 15, 2006 Share #21  Posted September 15, 2006 Advertisement (gone after registration) Hi Sean, I'd be very interested in seeing your review of the dlux3. One question though... is really only 100-400iso unlike the lx-2 which is 100-16600iso? As far as I can tell the dlux2 was pretty much identical in output to the lx-1, so is leica bringing more to the table with the latest iteration? That said, the M8 looks and sounds the real article. I reckon it will take me a year or so to save for one.... but I'll get there ;-)  Andy  Hi Andy,  I'm afraid that I haven't had a chance to work with that camera yet but I will review it. Till then, I don't have much in the way of special knowledge about it.  Cheers,  Sean

gylee Posted September 15, 2006 Share #23 Â Posted September 15, 2006 The D-lux 3 looks absolutely sexy... completely in black paint. I nearly mistaken it for a leica special edition. Â Â Here are four words I never thought I would say - I AGREE WITH ALFIE Â The black D-lux 3 looks like the dog's doodads. Â It has been a bad week for expensive impulse purchases - damn you Apple (new black Nano), damn you Leica (new black D-Lux 3). Â A shame it is not available until mid-October - off to Copenhagen for a mini-break next week. Would have come in handy. Still, some quality time with the CM won't go astray... gylee Posted September 15, 2006 Share #25 Â Posted September 15, 2006 Any chance you will be able to do some A/B comparisons between the LX2 and D-Lux 3 when the time comes? Â Don't know if you have seen the Reichmann review of the LX2 but he suggest that the image quality is not alwys as good as the LX1. No details though. Guest stnami Posted September 15, 2006 Share #26 Â Posted September 15, 2006 A little black noisebox, it is a pity the it doesn't have speckles of colour as a metaphor to the images produced in low light. J Mitchum Posted September 15, 2006 Share #28 Â Posted September 15, 2006 Don't know if you have seen the Reichmann review of the LX2 but he suggest that the image quality is not alwys as good as the LX1. No details though. Â There is a direct comparison between the LX-1 and LX-2 linked below. More pixels stuffed into the same tiny sensor means more noise. To compensate for the extra noise they use more aggresive noise reduction. This causes smearing and loss of detail. On the other hand the extra resolution can help make up for that in some cases but then you are just back to square one. It would be better if cameras were not ruled by marketing departments. If these were just 6 megapixels noise would be much lower. Â LX-1 vs LX-

peterb Posted September 15, 2006 Share #30 Â Posted September 15, 2006 Don't get me wrong, the totally black D-Lux 3 is DROP DEAD gorgeous. But with 2 million or so ADDITIONAL pixels crammed onto the SAME SIZED SENSOR, I fear that noise, even with the new Venus III processing engine, will at best be par with the previous 8 MP model and its engine, as an early review on the Luminous Landscape of the nearly identical LX2 intimated, or worse. Will pictures shot in RAW be salvaged? Seems like detail would be lost at the expense of cleanliness. Unless Leitz software tweaking is an improvement over what Panasonic has wrought. ChipNovaMac Posted September 16, 2006 Share #37 Â Posted September 16, 2006 I had heard that the D-Lux 3 is going to sell for $995US, the LX2 is being listed at $499US. The extra warranty and "free" software are not much a selling point for me. I just can't see the Leica "tweaks" being worth that much extra. Â Am I missing something?
