tripod recommendations?

I'd go with two: as large & sturdy as you can afford plus a small tablepod.

 

Both mine are from Manfrotto and are each very satisfactory.

 

My tablepod used to be the famous one from Leica, but after it was stolen from my luggage a few years ago -- TSA sticky fingers? -- I bought the Manfrotto table pod and have never regreted it.

My recommendation on tripods whenever asked is to get something you're likely to use and carry. Get a large, heavy tripod and it most likely will end up staying in the car or at home.

 

I like carbon fiber tripods because they're sturdy, but still light enough that people don't mind carrying them. Cost is sometimes a discouragement, but I've recommended the inexpensive Flashpoint tripods to a couple of people and they've been very happy with them. As far as I know, they are only available at Adorama.
