Guest moonwrack Posted March 1, 2008 Share #1 Posted March 1, 2008 Advertisement (gone after registration) I have been trying to find out what the M6 Titanium model top-plate is made from, underneath the titanium but have had conflicitng information. Is it brass? - or something like a zinc alloy? Is it, if fact, all titanium or is the titanium a thin layer deposited electrostatically, whatever? aesop Posted March 1, 2008 Share #2 Posted March 1, 2008 I have been trying to find out what the M6 Titanium model top-plate is made from, underneath the titanium but have had conflicitng information. Is it brass? - or something like a zinc alloy? Is it, if fact, all titanium or is the titanium a thin layer deposited electrostatically, whatever? Moonwrack, according to the "Technical Data on the M6" provided in the official Leica M6 brochure (English edition, 910479): The Leica M6 comes in three versions: - Silver chromium finish in the traditional Leica look (10404). - Black chromium finish for the modern, demanding professional (10414). - Titanium finish as a deluxe model that is particularly resistant to wear (10412). Camera body: Closed camera body of die-cast aluminium, hinged back. Top panel 0.8mm die cast zinc, bottom panel 0.8mm brass. Hope this helps. Enjoy:D . aesop Posted March 1, 2008 Share #4 Posted March 1, 2008 Google "titanium leica" and you get as the first hit my Leica FAQ topic on the subject :?) Leica FAQ - Titanium Leica notes Hey Andrew, I just used the link you provided (Leica FAQ - Titanium Leica notes) and it only further muddies the water. The information incorporated therein advises that the top plates of the M6 and M6 Titanium are made of brass. This assertion is not supported by Leica literature, which states quite categorically, that the top panels of the M6 and M6 Titanium are made of 0.8mm die-cast zinc. One thing is clear - both sources are saying two different things. Are you in a position to comment? Thanks.
nobbylon Posted March 1, 2008 Share #5 Posted March 1, 2008 I'd go with Tom A's quote. His has actually worn through showing brass underneath so whatever the literature says, on Tom's it was brass. Standard M6 where all zinc apparently as where most M6ttl's. The last ttl's where brass. Strangely my ttl made in 1999 therefore an earlier version has a brass top. My only thought is that at sometime it was replaced maybe before I got it. I know it's brass because when it was cla'd we scratched the inside to find out! masjah Posted March 1, 2008 Share #6 Posted March 1, 2008 It's entirely possible that Leica forgot to update all their publicity material etc., when there was a change. Exactly the same happened with the R8/R9. Top plate of the R9 was changed to magnesium to save a bit of weight, but I'm sure I've seen early R9 brochures citing the old R8 material, later versions being corrected. heninden Posted March 2, 2008 Share #7 Posted March 2, 2008 Advertisement (gone after registration) It's brass. Ten years ago, before the proliferation of black paint models, Shintaro removed the titanium finish on an M6ti and painted it black for me. Steve Ricoh Posted May 3, 2017 Share #8 Posted May 3, 2017 In the Technical Data accompanying the M6 I've just acquired it states the cover plate for the Titanium is made from 0.8mm brass. Is the cover plate another term for the top plate?
250swb Posted May 4, 2017 Share #9 Posted May 4, 2017 In the Technical Data accompanying the M6 I've just acquired it states the cover plate for the Titanium is made from 0.8mm brass. Is the cover plate another term for the top plate? It means the top plate. You have to take with a pinch of salt some of the translations in Leica literature, many people here remember the farrago concerning the then newly released MP being finished in 'lacquer'. Some thought it meant a Japanese lacquer finish, but of course it is just another word for 'paint' in Germany.
Steve Ricoh Posted May 6, 2017 Share #10 Posted May 6, 2017 It means the top plate. Some thought it meant a Japanese lacquer finish, but of course it is just another word for 'paint' in Germany. I can't find a definitive answer on this anywhere. Some say it's definitely brass, whilst others disagree saying the top plate is titanium plating over nichel plating over zinc.
