Gregm61 Posted August 24, 2017 Share #181 Posted August 24, 2017 Advertisement (gone after registration) Today I have in my bag, a mid-80's, Canadian 90mm f2 that I purchased a couple of years ago from Tamarkin, like new and in the box. Shortly thereafter it went to NJ and received the 6 bit conversion to use on my M9 and M262 bodies. Beautiful lens.

helged Posted May 7, 2018 Share #184 Posted May 7, 2018 SL + 75mm at f1.4. Yes, I love the 75 Lux-M... Gentle rendering wide open; very sharp stopped down a little. A very different lens compared to the new, close to optically perfect Leica offerings (the Thambar-class of lenses excluded). Welcome, dear visitor! LichtUndDunkelheit Posted May 9, 2018 Share #185 Posted May 9, 2018 But it really seems to be matter of degrees of brilliance, or differing tastes. I don't think there has ever been a really bad Leitz/Leica lens (only if it has deteriorated in condition.) You really have to compare them with lenses from other manufacturers to realize how good they are -- even the oldies. Err ... judging from places like rangefinderforums.com, theres actually plenty of people who use for example old Konica, Nikon, Canon, etc rangefinder lenses on Leica. See for example this thread: https://www.rangefinderforum.com/forums/showthread.php?t=163989 Obviously theres also Zeiss and Voigtländer lenses for Leica M, even today. So I'd say Leica really isnt the only one who can do good lenses. Sorry !
jmr237 Posted May 9, 2018 Share #186 Posted May 9, 2018 Recently Leica 'updated' their 28mm f2 & 2.8 and 35mm f2.8 lenses, with what appears to be minimal design changes, to suit the flatter (at the edges) digital sensor as apposed to the slightly 'curved' edges of a film sensor. Prior to that they appear to have been introducing FLE versions (the 90mm f2 to come). One clarification--the updated 35mm lens was the f2 Summicron. Leica does not currently produce a 35mm f2.8. Other than the new hood design, the only change on the 35mm Summicron was the use of a higher number of aperture blades. The updated 28mm f2 and f2.8 lenses, in contrast, do appear to have been updated with optical changes (see Sean Reid review).

Metin Colak Posted October 10, 2018 Share #190 Posted October 10, 2018 An incredible lens. It gives you opportunity to discover your potential and every day. Metin Colak Posted October 10, 2018 Share #191 Posted October 10, 2018 Real artists do not talk too much...But their works... Mandler did not talk too much... It is hard to find so many interviews made with him... Only a few, not more than 2-3... When Erwin Puts calls him as a 'pragmatist' rather than a genius he made a vital mistake though, he was real genius; a genius created an undefinable mixture of photography and painting which transcends photography as a medium, and reality in the end...

I fully agree, but it could indeed be that he was a genius without knowing. Popular Post adan Posted October 11, 2018 Author Popular Post Share #194 Posted October 11, 2018 (edited) Fun to see this thread still bouncing along after more than 10 years. I notice my original illustrations on the first page have vanished with this week's change-over in Forum software. I don't know if 10-year-old image uploads will be recovered - if not, I will try to reconstruct them. My own setup had also bounced around over the intervening years, but just yesterday I finalized revising my lens set (a-gain!), and it is now once more all Mandler, and almost all Canadian built. I just really appreciate the lower contrast of Mandler lenses on digital - helps control those highlights! I still have the 21mm Elmarit-M f/2.8 that I got in 2003. Midland-made (1983). And a Midland-made 28mm v.2 (1976) and 50mm Summicron v.4 (1980). And a Solms-made last-version 135 Tele-Elmar-M. I don't know whether Dr. Mandler was a genius or not. Nor whether he was a "pragmatist" or not. But I believe he was a man of his time - ~1950-1985-ish. A period when, in the beginning, resolution and gross contrast were still measured separately (no MTFs) - and resolution counted for more (if you needed contrast, there was always Agfa Brovira Grade 6). Coatings were still unsophisticated (although improving all the time) and if one wanted a lens to "appear" sharp - it had to be sharp. And preferably with as few elements (air-glass surfaces) as possible. Not only to cut down of reflections, but because each surface had to be calculated with a slide-rule, not a computer. (Mandler was a major force in the development of lens-calculation software over his career, however). A time when 35mm was becoming a professional and artistic format - but primarily in the area of humanist documentation and journalism (serious landscape photographers still used Deardorffs - like their saint, Ansel Adams. As did product and commercial and portrait shooters). Center resolution (where the rangefinder patch is) was king, and the corners could go hang, at least at f/2. A time when Boke was something one gave a partner on a date, or sniffed in a wine. Mandler has also been called "an optimizer" and while that is probably true (but a bit dry) with reference to technical choices, I also think it is true in the creative sense. He "optimized" his designs for the zeitgeist of the late-mid 20th Century - the LIFE photographers and the Winogrands, the Magnum photographers and the Jim Marshalls, the Cartier-Bressons and the Erwitts, the guys and gals in the rice paddies of Vietnam and at Woodstock and facing the Berlin Wall. When it came time to choose between minimizing this aberration or that aberration, he had a picture in his mind of what "a Leica photograph" should look like. And made his compromises in favor of that. Anyway, it is late, so I will just leave you with this, for tonight - 28mm Elmarit v.2 on Leica M10, 2018 - title: You Figure It Out!. Thank You, Dr. Mandler! Welcome, dear visitor! As registered member you'd see an image here… Simply register for free here – We are always happy to welcome new members!
