I have a 50mm LTM Summicron on my IIIG and would like to get the period correct hood for it.

What is the correct hood for this lens?

Hello John,

The IIIG was made between 1957 and 1960. You have two choices for the E39 Summicron, the ITDOO was made between 1956-59 and the IROOA made in 1959. Both versions are very similar in appearance and are fairly easily available from collector's sites like Kevin Camera for $100 and up.

The Summicron 50 you have can mount also the strange SOOFM (and also the last version of the SOOPD, originally made for Summitar) ; it's a strange black folding hood, with rectangular window... when closed, acts as a cap too and this is its only advantage...you cannot put the IIIG into its bag with this hood on the lens, and that is annoying...

But if you like something really unusual... GET ONE ! Not difficult to find nor costly.

This is marked "Summitar"... the Summicron version is identical in shape

Ah Luigi. Now you are having fun. 8-). But you should show the hood on a camera. Here is the Summitar version on a Summitar on a IIIf.

... I was too lazy to mount the hood on my IIIf (like yours, just a little younger... 725.xxx) mount the Viso on the M8 and take a pic of the combo...

Your image displays very well how big is that strange hood...

Yes I think the engineers got a little carried away with this design. But it does work. This is the only hood I could find for the Summitar, which I think is every bit as good or better then the early Summicrons. For the Summicron I prefer the 12585 hood. It came a little after the IIIf and IIIg era (1963) but is my preferred hood for the collapsible Summicron.

Here is a 1938 Leica III with a 1956 Summicron and the 1963 #12585 hood.
