arthury Posted March 6, 2008 Share #61 Posted March 6, 2008 Advertisement (gone after registration) RE: Leica USA, NJ I sent in my M8 (LCD leaked in dust) and 2 lenses (for coding). The lenses are already back. Are you guys saying that the M8 lenses were adjusted for focus on my M8? Please note that there was NOTHING on the invoice for the lenses that says anything about focus adjustments, even though I asked for it in my letter that accompanied the repair items. When I get back my M8 and if things are not right, I am going to call it quits. I have ENOUGH of this BS --- I'm overflowing with it.
Advertisement Posted March 6, 2008 Posted March 6, 2008 Hi arthury, Take a look here This is really crazy! New 6bit coding price 433€ (not even the 169€ from before). I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
wilfredo Posted March 7, 2008 Share #62 Posted March 7, 2008 My lenses work fine without coding. I'm happy with their excellent performance. My photography has not suffered one iota. I have a 35mm Summicron ASPH, a 50mm Hexanon every bit as good as the 50mm Summicron I used to own, and a 90mm Elmarit. No coding, no problems, I'm a happy camper with no crazy bills from Leica. I'm sorry this has turned into a lousy experience for you. Cheers, Wilfredo Benitez-Rivera Photography
russell Posted March 7, 2008 Author Share #63 Posted March 7, 2008 Checked the lenses last night. Focus seems to still be ok. Noctilux if anything is a touch better. So even though it cost a bomb, in the end I have to say the service was good speedwise and no suprises when I opened the box.
hache Posted March 9, 2008 Share #64 Posted March 9, 2008 I have a question. If the lense is still on warranty do you have to pay for focus adjustment or any calibration? Anybody knows it?? Thanks
jimrivers Posted March 27, 2008 Share #65 Posted March 27, 2008 There is another area on this forum that tells you how to add the 6bit thing with a 25 cent sharpie marker pen. When I first heard about the 6bit coding, I thought it was some kind of electrical thing. Like a microchip or something. I sent 5 lenses to Leica USA to have the 6bit done. It cost me $125 per lens plus shipping for a total of about $700. You folks overseas need to know that 700 American dollars will still get you more that a Sunday paper. I read that Leica was doing this at their cost. Leica has a very serious overhead problem if they can not put six colored dots on the back a lens for less that $125. I feel this M8 thing is akin to making a covered wagon into some kind mechanical device by putting a small steam engine into the hub of each wheel and having four steam driven robotic horses out front pulling the thing. While this may be a tour de force in engineering, the question is why?
marknorton Posted March 27, 2008 Share #66 Posted March 27, 2008 Unfortunately, not every consumer transaction can be dumbed down to the output of a Chinese sweat shop or artery clogging junk food served up by people wearing their hats the wrong way round who know little and care less. If it costs 25 Big Macs to get one of your lenses coded, and you think that is too much, how many Big Macs do you think it should cost? Oh, and by the way, how much does it cost to have a dental check-up in the US?

stunsworth Posted March 27, 2008 Share #68 Posted March 27, 2008 R2-D2, if Jim sat down and thought through what Leica are doing for those 25 Big Macs he'd realise that the cost is reasonable. If he still doesn't think it's reasonable then the answer is simple, don't have it done. We've been over this ground dozens of times.

guy Posted April 1, 2008 Share #70 Posted April 1, 2008 I was referring to "[...] know little and care less."... When I was a teenager I took holiday jobs in a load of places including Dixons and Currys (renowned for the expertise of their staff... not). Admittedly I didn't care all that much, but I certainly knew a lot – more than I do now, probably, the way it's falling out of my head. What I'm saying is the kid behind the counter could be a Leica owner of the future!
