Tony C. Posted February 2, 2008 Share #4 Posted February 2, 2008 OK, I'm now bracing myself for the inexorable avalanche of concerns, outrage, and various speculation based on this "hint". On second thought, I think that I'll simply take a break from the various Leica forums until most of the snow has thundered down the mountain. Tony, I guess we'll see you in a couple of years... Please see below what I think are some of the threads coming up throughout the rest of the year... It's all fun, folks... no hate mail, please -March, 2008 1-Leica upgrade website available 2-Poll - Who has paid for the M8 upgrade? 3-Poll - Where do you think you are in the upgrade queue? 4-Leica charged my cc... I'm pissed -August, 2008 1-My camera is being picked up... 2-Poll - Have you received the pick up notice? 3-Poll - How long do you think it will really take to perform the upgrade? 4-They came to pick up the camera but I was not home, I'm pissed 5-John Doe paid for the upgrade after me but his camera was picked up before mine... I'm pissed -August 15th, 2008 1-Where is my camera? 2-Poll - Have you received any updates on your upgrade? 3-Poll - Did you get your camera yet? 4-Poll - If you received your camera, was the upgrade worth it? 5-The upgrade sucks... sdai Posted February 2, 2008 Share #9 Posted February 2, 2008 Sounds a lot of fun at this year's Kina ... at least 3 companies will launch their next generation flagship cameras. Who else is going? I want to book my flight tomorrow. Lots of good stuff to see, folks ... besides the Leicas, there should be the Zeiss 16-35/2.8 for Sony as well. Guest guy_mancuso Posted February 2, 2008 Share #11 Posted February 2, 2008 That's all I will say. Actually Leica said it , just no one really picked up on it.
Guest guy_mancuso Posted February 2, 2008 Share #12 Posted February 2, 2008 Read it carefully in the article Imants linked to Chris Cheesman and Angela Nicholson Leica's chief has dropped strong hints that the firm is planning to launch a full-frame 35mm sensor based digital rangefinder camera. Steven Lee, chief executive officer of Leica Camera AG, today told Amateur Photographer that the camera could form part of a future upgrade option for the current M8. But, he said Leica wants to make sure that a full-frame option is ready before launch, in a bid to avoid a repeat of initial issues that dogged the M8 launch

adan Posted February 2, 2008 Share #16 Posted February 2, 2008 Deep breaths, folks, DEEP breaths! Just remember that Leica finally said it would build a digital rangefinder at PMA 2004 - and it arrived at PK 2006 So if Leica finally says it will build a FULL_FRAME digital rangefinder at PMA 2008.....can you say "the year we make contact"? AKA "2010"? No - I'm sure it will be sooner than that, and if they can make it by PK 2008, that'll be slick... but - DEEP BREATHS!! Still - it is good to have the intention (almost) clearly stated publicly.

4season Posted February 2, 2008 Share #18 Posted February 2, 2008 It wouldn't be the most trivial of upgrades, that's for sure. The "throat" of the current camera is less than 33mm across, and in order to widen it, the battery needs to be narrower, and the blue dot sensor board needs to be moved. Refer to Mark Norton's M8 anatomy posts to see what's involved: http://www.l-camera-forum.com/leica-forum/leica-m8-forum/21331-anatomy-leica-m8.html What if the combination of larger sensor + smaller battery meant only 120-150 raw photos per charge, would that be an acceptable tradeoff for anyone? I typically get about 200 max with the current camera.
ho_co Posted February 2, 2008 Share #19 Posted February 2, 2008 Remember, the sensor is to be CCD! Doesn't that mean a supplier other than EK? Doesn't that also mean a lower power draw? Couldn't they offer--as an accessory, of course--the option of an under-camera battery pack, similar to what Nikon does for D200? Might be able to get two of the current batteries into such a grip/battery pack? And forgetting that speculation--for CCD performance, I think some of us might be willing to sacrifice a bit of battery life. I think the best part of this is that the M9 is here, and we already own it. --HC
