AWB: now it really works

Maurizio:

It seems I can't do what you did there with my 1.201-updated M8. These images are made under neon/fluorescent light and too green. I must say it is consistent: there is no difference between the setting at AutoWhiteBalance or at Flurescent.

I do like the new AWB though I had gotten used to shooting everything in DNG and processing. It'd be nice if they had an AWB "bias", where you could either bias the AWB to be warmer or cooler. Kind of like an exposure compensation. Hmm...come to think of it, does such a thing exist on any digicam?

What lens/filter did you use? and have you got the full size picture?i guess these are cropped, so it would be nice to see wher the camera di fault in calibrating AWB...

Maurizio, your second post of that picture (the C/U detail) is MUCH better than the original you posted. Did you work on it, or is this how the camera delivered it?

I have just upgraded one of my M8's and I find overall the AWB to deliver colder colour than I believe to be best, but this a very premature comment. Over the W/E when I have some time I will do more extensive testing before upgrading the FW in my second body.

Yep Erl,

in the second post I started from almost the same picture but i did a PP white balance.

I guess they lifted the medium value to a colder setting which i like myself too the most.

Now I've got a new full day behind me to make some more shots... let's see what happens!

Could compare auto WB between old 1.110 and new 1.201 firmware - No doubt, WB algorythms have strongly been corrected for better results. You can actually realize how wrong auto WB was before ;-)

no it's not cropped. I used 50 S'cron at ~70cm with IR-filter. By the way, using a lens without this filter with the new firmware-updat makes the magenta-thing even worse than before in Tungstenlight

I used the camera with the update last night at a school play. The lighting was a mix of tungsten on stage and fluorescent at the reception. My first impression is that the M8 handled white balance both more accurately and much more consistently than before.

Well, for JPEG shooters, the best way to get "accurate" WB is still to do a custom one before you shoot.

But as Han says, accurate is not necessarily what you want anyway.

The good news about the firmware is that at least the AWB is somewhere near the ballpark and that it's consistent shot-to-shot, so if I lost my mind and actually shot RAW with AWB, I could correct in post, in theory, more easily I guess :)

Yes Andy!

I used a leica UV/IR filter + 35lux asph.

Did you noticed something strange?

Well, you have purple chair covers, plus purple in various other shots (reflection on the CD on the desk, for example)

If they are purple chair covers, I apologise :)

Honestly I almost always shoot Raw with AWB and i agree it is nice to be much closer when you are editing and processing , just makes the task smoother.

Yes biting my tongue is a bit hard, I get excited and want to tell you folks. I stayed out of trouble this time. LOL

It must be so difficult for you to keep your mouth shut Guy.

I agree that the AWB is much improved but it is still easily fooled. I took a shot of a candle in my entry way, it was lighted by incandescent and natural daylight. The wall in the adjacent dining room was just lit by daylight. The candle and close walls were very close to correct but the far wall lit with daylight was blue (it is actually beige) Only by setting to cloudy day could I get both the near object and the far object to properly match.

No need to apologize, really: but they're purple chari covers:p !

The reflection on the CD on the desk is right indeed (it's a Traxdata DVD+R and it's purple too!

Only in my last post the coulrs weren't fine (the wide angle shot): it's a CV12 shot without UV/IR filter.

Anyway, i feel like this new AWB setting is pointing out the magenta cast when you don't use an UV/IR filter.

Is it just my feel?

And there's an added benefit. In a restaurant with friends and did a couple of shots. In the past I'd never pass the M8 to them to have a look - I hated having to say "It's a great camera, but the shots look awful on the screen on the body - I'll email you some asap".

Embarrasing with friends - potentially damaging if you're with a client.

With the the new AWB, we're so much closer to WYSIWYG so it's fine to pass the camera across for people to review progress so far.

The shot attached was with mixed artifical / daylight, ISO 320. It looked the same on the bory. I'm happy.

Looking at todays shots, what I see is they went from an algorithm that had 4 possible WB settings and picked the one that seemed to match to an Auto WB algorithm that actually computes a white balance. Before, I would have all my shots belonging to one of the 4 presets, in todays shots, the WB settings are different every shot. The previous WB algorithm was perfect as long as you only took pictures at 3500K, 5900K, 6500K?, 7400K which is never really the case...

This is indeed a serious improvement, now there is an Auto WB (instead of auto manual balance), and when reviewing after a shot I now see the same colors on the LCD that on the scene.
