The magnification function (focus assist) isn't working

The magnification function (focus assist) has stopped working, and when I press the button where I have magnification assigned, what happens is what's shown in the attached photo… a white box appears in the lower left corner of the screen.

 

Moving the focus ring does enable focus picking, but it still doesn't magnify. The white box always appears in the lower left corner of the screen.

 

Interestingly, I was in Wetzlar two days ago and they cleaned my sensor, and this started happening afterward.

 

What do you think it could be?

You may have set the magnification with the thumb wheel to 100%. After pressing the assigned button turn the thumb wheel to change magnification.

I can't believe it! Logic always works, and I didn't use it.
