Hi everyone,

I’m trying to understand the file numbering behavior on my Leica SL3.

I know the camera organizes files into folders like 100LEICA, 101LEICA, 102LEICA, etc. Inside each folder, the filenames follow the pattern L1000001–L1001016, L1010001–L1011013, and so on. From what I can see, it seems each folder should contain around a thousand photos before a new one is created.

However, I’ve noticed that it doesn’t always follow that pattern. For example, my 102LEICA folder only has about 400 photos before the next folder 103LEICA was created. And sometimes the new folder doesn’t start from 0001 — it might begin from something like 0020 instead.

Is this normal behavior for the SL3? Is there any way to set or control when a new folder is created (for example, after 1000 or 9999 shots), or to reset the numbering so it starts consistently?

Thanks in advance for any insight!

I thought I had noticed something similar on importing into Lightroom.. However on looking at my memory card right now in a file browser I see from my last shoot (on a card emptied in computer prior) that 108Leica has exactly 1000 files as expected ( L1080489 to L1081488 inclusive) then 109Leica starts with L1090001
I can only speculate on whether something changed at last firmware update, what and how you delete, whether deleting in or out of camera, and whether two cards in the camera at what file save disposition is set.
So in my case the camera preserved the folder number and file number when I deleted previous shoot from card prior  in computer with card reader (to remove starred images in bulk).

I do not believe you can alter that frequency of new folder starting. You can reset the file number back to  L000001 start. I prefer not to do that to avoid duplicate file numbers.
