Very nice! To what extent is the high quality due to analog vs digital processing? Did software help to get these nice blacks and whites and the three-dimensionality out of the film?

I used silver effects. Increased blacks and white a bit and added minimum texture in the shadows, plus a copper tint.

This was a roll I developed in reversal with the scala kit, or at least tried to. Not the easiest of processes, quite a few frames came up with a grey band in the middle of the frame because the bleach doesn’t work as well as it should in my experience.

My preferred tool, too. I congratulate you to the professional development - what I often see here is too much sharpening resulting in funny edges, crazy curves leading to the conceivabley darkest skies or panoramas emphasizing different shares of middle grey. Your pictures are an example of a great skill set, also where the tonal range is concerned, maybe applying the digital version of the zone system. Can you also say something about the quality of the film - other than it surely "works"?

Thank you for the compliment. Indeed, I do not like over-processed pictures. I always try to make the final result look natural.


About the film itself? Well, it was my very first roll with it, so it is a bit early for a complete assessment. What I noticed is how good the pictures looked straight out of the scanner. I really did not have much to do in post; the tones were quite good from the get-go. Second, I can really see the difference between a modern optic (35 apo) and an old design (21 super angulon).  Normally, I see that much difference on digital, not on film. So, the resolution must be extremely high.

Next thing I'm going to do is to shoot the exact same thing, with the same lens, on both Monopan 50 and with my M11 monochrome. I have a couple rollls in my film bodies, it will be fun!

I bought four rolls of Monopan at the Leica store in Paris in early September before heading out on a two-week trip to Normandy and Brittany. I shot it at box speed.

I got the scans back last week. They were way too bright, and I had to do a lot of work in Lightroom to bring the highlights back down. I was worried about how the negatives would look, because, for me, the whole point of shooting film is to make my own silver gelatin prints. But I picked up the negs today and they look great! Very dense (not too dense) and contrasty, with excellent detail. I look forward to making darkroom prints next week.

As an example, here's a shot of the abbey at Longues-sur--Mer. MP | Monopan 50 | 35mm APO. Developed in Ilfotec DD-X.

When I gave my four exposed rolls of Monopan to my local lab, I also gave them the data sheet from the Leica website that specifies several developers. The lab used Ilfotec DD-X—one of the developers recommended by Leica. The negatives I got back look exceptionally good—great contrast, sharpness and detail.
