Erwin was always very passionate about Leica and Leica lenses. He would always get quite animated in his discussions with us. Too bad more people were not acquainted with him in person. I had him on the program as a speaker at the Chicago LHSA meeting. Before he was about to speak, he called out to me from across the hall outside the meeting room. Seemed rather excited about something. Well, that's Erwin, I thought as he was walking toward me. Just then, he passed out and fell to the floor! He ended up in the hospital. One of our group, who was a doctor, went with him in the ambulance and attended to him. He recovered after a couple of days and went home. It was such a missed opportunity for our group to hear him in person and share his passion about Leica.

He was not a big fan of the digital M cameras. I think he would be quite surprised to see how advanced they have become, and I think he would readily embrace them today. I missed seeing him in person over the last years of his life, but we kept up a good correspondence via emails, and he always sent me his latest books for review for the Viewfinder. They will always be an important part of my Leica library!

I never got that impression, although he preferred film per-se. It was also a shame he became disenchanted with the direction of the company, although with hindsight he would hopefully have recognised the benefit.

Erwin loved to shoot with his M8.2
