Nice little film

Great little film, I have 545 but converted to a IC, still with the Elmax lens. It will be 100 years old on Wednesday according to Leica.

I have discussed 554 and 555 with Ivor and Stefan. It is great that we will see them on their birthday later this week. Below is a photo I took of the entries for the two cameras some years ago.

The dimpled mushroom shutter button would have been added to 555 in 1930 to allow the use of a remote cable. I am bringing one of my I Model As with a dimpled mushroom to the event in Wetzlar.

The condition of the paint on 554 looks superior to that on 555, as he mentions in the video, but it seems to be due to repainting. What do you all think?

Could be - I remember back in the 1960s or 70s a story in a Leica magazine about a Scottish doctor who completely restored Leica I cameras by disassembling completely, stripping paint, repainting and assembling to like new condition. Back then that was viewed as a good thing.

George Gordon Carr was a founder member of the British Leica Historical Society.

He was only referred to as a "Leica doctor" and was not actually a doctor.

In the early LHS magazines he has articles about servicing and repairing very early and rare Leicas (Null Series 113 for example was serviced by him) from clients worldwide.

Here is part of the article you are referring to from Leica Photography magazine 1968 Issue 1

Alan Stokes

not only repainted but as well re-engraved, with white paint filling. But otherwise looks genuine with vulcanite and short rewind lever

That's it - thanks for the clarification. Haven't seen that since 1968...
