I asked Ansmann about the Digicharger Vario, and they said, yes, it can charge M8-batteries (they should know, for they build the original charger). Ansmann sent me a data sheet (in German, I am sorry).

The charger itself is 117*62*27mm, plus the 12V-adapter (car adapter oder 230/110 V).

Regards,

Stefan

I am suspicious of universal chargers which only have two contacts. The third contact is there to control charging rate, preventing over charging by I believe monitoring battery temperature. I would assume that Ansmann did not put in the third contact in the original charger purely for fun. I have not heard from Tim for some time (I was prepared to act as a co-investor with Tim in the battery project), so I am guessing the project may be dead.

Over at RangefinderForum someone was recommended to use this alternate Ansmann charger:

ANSMANN AG: Digicharger Vario

I've seen this charger in stores before and it is only SLIGHTLY smaller than the normal Leica charger, how well it works I have no idea.........

I've had one for a couple months. It works perfectly. It says the charging process is "microprocessor controlled" and has overcharge protection. I haven't noticed my M8 batteries getting any warmer than they do on the Leica charger (also made by Ansmann).
