Hey guys. I wanted to create a thread for user reviews of the new Leica Q3 43.

I tried to create a template so the reviews can be compared to each other and maybe if people want to, this could be a "sticky" in the Q forum.

I'll go first!

Leica Q3 43 user review:

Usage:

  • Time owned: 1-2 weeks.
  • Main use street, family, travel, outdoors.

Pros:

  1. Portability
  2. 60 mpx sensor
  3. Very capabel APO lens

Cons:

  1. Leica Q series in general isn't as fun to use for me as it is practical, or as fun to use as an M camera.
  2. Price
  3. Stuck to one focal length

Notable features:

  • Image quality: superb
  • AF performance: worse than I thought. I thought the phase detection would be more of a game changer than it is.
  • EVF experience: very good
  • Handling: superb, easy and intuitive to use.
  • Other: I love the new Leica looks, shooting chrome and getting the jpegs (and dngs) insanely quick on my phone if I want to / need to bypass computer.

Real world experience

So far I've used it as a street camera and taking various images of my family.

Worth the price?

Depends. Are the Leica APO lenses worth $6000+ ? If they are, this is definetly worth $8000 since you get a smaller APO lens and a 60 mpx camera hand assembled by Leica in Germany. I think for most people though, it would not be worth it. That being said, a Sony RX1R mark 3 if it comes out, will not be under $6000 (I think) either.

Leica Q3 43 user review:

Usage:

  • 2 weeks
  • At the moment for everything

Pros:

The lens is a beast (ultra sharp and contrasty)

Weather sealed

Tilt screen

3D Pop is awesome

Cons:

As a M user still struggling with the autofocus but that’s my fault

Build quality not as good as a M (still high end)

Not so enjoyable to shoot like a M

EVF is disappointing compared to SL

Notable features:

  • The sensor is outstanding
  • Image quality very good
  • Close focus is great

Real world experience

Worth the price? Depending on your expeditions

Rating: 8/10

Leica Q3 43 user review:

Usage:

  • 2 weeks
  • Street / Travel

Pros:

1. Size/weight

2. Quality/speed of lens

3. User interface

Cons:

1. AF is not fast or intelligent

2. Do not like the filter/macro conflict.

Notable features:

  • Image quality / file size
  • AF performance - not that great.  Eye detection is really wonky compared to my other mirrorless cameras.
  • EVF experience - works fine
  • Handling - user interface is great
  • Other - love the size and weight.

Real world experience

The Q3 43 is not that different from the Q3 in operation and user experience.  The lens is sharper and longer minimizing the loss of resolution if you use the crop feature.  I have and I don't feel that it's much of a loss in light of the versatility.  The camera is light and small making it convenient and comfortable for a day of walking around.  Easy to pack away for trips.  It's my go to camera.  I am taking it with me on my upcoming trip to Provence, France.  I used the Q3 exclusively in April for a 2 week trip to Paris and it was wonderful.  Especially in low light.

Worth the price? Yes/No - It's a Leica - what can I say.

Rating: X/10: 9/10 because the AF / AF intelligence for eye detection is not up to current standards.

EVF could be better

No lossless compressed RAW option

 Notable Features

Image quality

Real World Experience

This is my first Leica and the first time, in a long time, that I have not had an interchangeable lens.

I needed a change of style and wanted to think about the image more rather than the equipment that I should use to capture the shot.  I believe that the Q3 will help me do that, but there will be, an enjoyable, learning curve for me.

I had settled on buying a Q3 but just a few days before I made the purchase the Q3 43 was announced, I swithered over which model to choose, both are great cameras and I believe that I have chosen the model that suits my style of photography the best but only time will tell!
