andybarton Posted October 20, 2024 Share #1 Posted October 20, 2024 Advertisement (gone after registration) As is customary, at the recent Nice One Challenge, the location for next year's meeting was decided. In a very close vote, requiring a tie-break, Palma de Mallorca was chosen. Saturday 11th October 2025. Having never been to Spain for more than one night, and no knowledge of Palma, I will need help in sorting out meeting venues, when the time comes. 4

Viv Posted October 22, 2024 Share #3 Posted October 22, 2024 Hmmm. The town of Palma is mostly white concrete.

The old town isn't, with a most wonderful Cathedral. Palma has never suffered from fire or the ravages of war. Welcome, dear visitor! I was at a wedding there some time ago, it was not a pleasant place. 1
andybarton Posted October 22, 2024 Author Share #6 Posted October 22, 2024 I’m sure it will be fine if we are careful about choosing where to go. There are tourists who go there to get smashed or who never see daylight, and those who want to see the old town and just get mildly fed and watered. I suspect the audience here fall into the latter group. It’s not Magaluf that we are going to. Well, I’m not, anyway. I bought a guide book this lunchtime. It covers both Menorca and Ibiza, too, but there’s a good chunk on Palma and what I’ve read so far, it looks OK.

andybarton Posted October 22, 2024 Author Share #8 Posted October 22, 2024 Apparently, many bars and restaurants close on Sundays and Mondays. Worth noting.

Did your guide book happen to mention why? eg religious reasons, 'long' Saturday's trading, local bye-laws etc? Pete.
andybarton Posted October 22, 2024 Author Share #10 Posted October 22, 2024 No, but as a Catholic country, I can see why Sunday might be a religious thing. The restaurant we went to on the Friday in Nice closed on Sunday and Monday too, but that wasn’t widespread there.
Olaf_ZG Posted October 22, 2024 Share #11 Posted October 22, 2024 This one I will have to decline for sure. But, instead of wine I might need to change my contribution to sangria 🍷
earleygallery Posted October 22, 2024 Share #12 Posted October 22, 2024 I’ve visited Mallorca a few times, mostly staying around Alcudia. I remember visiting Palma for an afternoon and also dropped into Magaluf but left quickly! It would however offer up some Parr- esque opportunities I think, although maybe it’s much quieter in October.
NaAn Posted October 25, 2024 Share #13 Posted October 25, 2024 (edited) As you probably already know, I lived there for 15 years. Not in Palma but close enough to have a wonderful time in Palma. Unfortunately city changed and many things are gone. Some of my favorite restaurants are shut, cafes too. It use to be a nice place in a center with bars where you can go just for the drink in the evening, meeting friends and now it’s houses and no more than just a quiet area. However, I’m sure the outstanding architecture, beautiful old town and marvelous weather are still there 😀 Edited October 25, 2024 by NaAn 3

DigitalHeMan Posted December 14, 2024 Share #15 Posted December 14, 2024 Jolly good, I've just booked the AH Art Hotel from Thursday to Sunday, thanks for doing the research Nothing to pay up front and free cancellation as you say.... Now to figure out flights. Given how badly KLM have handled me the last two times I've flown with them, I'll probably end up with Easyjet as well this time.....
andybarton Posted January 9 Author Share #16 Posted January 9 I booked our flights and hotel at Heathrow this afternoon. We used the Sofitel at T5 last year and it has rather spoiled us. It's a bit more expensive than the Holiday Inn on the Bath Road, but you don't have to factor in taxis both ways, or the stupid "once per hour" shuttle bus, so is a much more pleasant experience. Great dinner there too. I couldn't book the flight back that I wanted on the Monday. There are two BA flights, but all the Club Europe seats had been sold on the earlier flight, even this far out, so we don't get back to London until about 17:10, which is a bit of a pain. Two CW flights were £118 return, plus some of my Avios.
earleygallery Posted January 9 Share #17 Posted January 9 (edited) For anyone in the UK, on C5 there’s a programme on tonight at 8pm about Majorca - “Cameras explore Majorca’s culture….”. Edited January 9 by earleygallery

lanetomlane Posted Tuesday at 05:38 PM Share #19 Posted Tuesday at 05:38 PM Too early to think about it yet. We don't even buy green tomatoes these days. All being well, we'll probably end up on a Jet2 package holiday. One way or another, we'll be there.

The good news is that getting to Palma and finding accomodation on short notice will be no issue at all. Stefan 1
