caf Posted September 11, 2024 Share #41  Posted September 11, 2024 Advertisement (gone after registration) My take is good situational awareness and common sense will go a long way. I’ve taken my Leica gear including 50 and 35 APOs, 75 Noctilux, SL, etc. in trips in Latin America (central and south) and Europe. I grew up in LatAm so tend to be extremely aware of prepping my routes for the day, be out “with purpose” and overall watch out and try to not put myself in situations where I wouldn’t want to be in with my family. I can replace any gear but always put first my and family safety. Latin America is a fascinating place that requires a bit more planning and risk management than other places, and it’s where I’ve had some of the best times of my life. Been there several times this years and have 3-4 more trips planned in the next year  If you’re looking for careless wandering around without any regards for self awareness there’s other places where you can roll with a lower guard. With that said stuff or bad luck can happen anywhere and have insurance for my more exotic stuff in case something happens. Hope this helps. I’ve had stuff stolen in places that most people would consider “safe” in US, and have seen sketchy stuff pretty much everywhere I’ve been to from Europe to Japan to US to LatAm, so I think these principles are true anywhere.

Most robbers are sad drug addicts with stoned brains. Wilson Considering the total numbers this is for sure true. But depending on the possible high value robbery targets, very specialised robbers have come up, even snatching Rolexes and other more expensive watches from your wrist (they would not snatch your Casio watch). Said phenomena that I first became aware of in Barcelona some years ago is now even present in Munich!
