Just an FYi, the “new” battery pack I just purchased from Ace Photo….the date code was “1113”, so it’s been in the shelf for 11 years and, of course, will not take a charge today.

Would you mind to explain why? I have 2 batteries from 2013 that still charge normally so i'm just trying to understand.

I have also batteries from 2012 and 2013 for the M 240 that are still working. But for that you have to charge them from time to time. If they sit just on the shelf at the dealer and never get charged for 11 years they are gone.
I had the same thing with some Nikon batteries that I bought together with the camera as spare but never used them. When the used battery got weak years later all my stored one was dead.

Bought now 3 new ones (in real  from 2022 & 23) for my M from a Leica-store. All where at 0%. Hope that the 2 years without charge didn't harm them to much, but that's not ideal.

It probably sat too long on a shelf without charging and dropped below the point that it will charge.

It is this point i don't understand. Dealers are still selling batteries like that and they do work. I can hardly imagine them charging those bateries from time to time and selling them as new 10 years later but i'm porbably (certainly?) missing something.

It would depend on when the battery was made and the conditions it was stored.

Yep. Of the four batteries I have been using, one is dated 2015 and three are 2013 dated and all four still charge to 100% and are long-lasting.

The difference with this “new” battery dated 2013, I’m going to venture a guess it has sat for 11 years and has likely been flat the last 8-9 years and simply will not take a charge now vs ones that have been in pretty constant use.

Placed in the charger the green light blinks for an hour or so, then the green and orange light start flashing very fast and alternately. Plugging the battery into a camera, it’s still totally dead.

As noted above earlier, I have now been told by someone at Leica Store Miami these batteries may be available again via the parts department; just place a backorder request to get on the list and they’ll let me know when they’re available.

Jump start the battery that won’t charge.

Update for Australian M240/262/246 owners.

I was able to purchase two new Leica batteries from an overseas dealer, together with a new Leica charger. The batteries cannot be shipped without a related accessory (usually a camera but this is an example of an alternative). Leica Australia has no stock of BP-SCL2

I had previously enquired about purchasing from UK and NZ and both were unable to ship batteries to Australia under postal regulations. Neither dealer offered an option to meet the regulations.

How the date is printed differs very much over the years. Was on several places. On my latest ones it is pressed into the plastic. Really hard to see. I need a magnifier to read it. But there was an date on every battery I own (10 in total).

I have three batteries all made in Korea but only one has a date stamped on it, anyone else’s batteries are like this?

As fotomas has said sometimes it takes a bit of sleuthing to see the date-stamp.

It almost certainly WILL be there but you might have to unearth the old magnifying glass and hold the battery in a particular orientation to see it...

Philip.

Are you sure those are dates folks? Mine say 0213VB (Febr. 2013?), 1113VB (Nov. 2013?) and 4823VB (????), the last one being engraved instead of stamped on the battery.

I understand first two numbering of week, not month,

so 48th week of year 2023

Thank you for this information. I have 2013 and 4115, both Korea. The 4115 is the original battery for my M262, which aligns with production dates. Both charge to 95% according to the camera’s battery meter. Hopefully the new batteries I have coming accept a full charge, so I have at least 5-10 more years of potentially reliable service from my M262.

Yes. As Arnaud has already mentioned (and was raised in post #16) the first two digits refer to the week; not the month.

This is the same nomenclature as was used with batteries for the M8 / M9 cameas.

Philip.

My two new batteries and charger arrived today. I’ll update on production dates and charge capacity when I’ve unpacked and tested. Should assist with our understanding of what’s available and what to expect.

The one which I acquired recently (as mentioned; 30th week 2019) arrived fully charged-up and was installed in the camera straight away. That was on the 25th July and the camera is telling me that the charge is still at 90%. I haven't been able to use the camera very much but even so; considering I didn't know quite what to expect from a 5-y-o NOS battery things are looking OK so far.
