Did spot two marks on my APO Summicron M 35 front lens. Around 1mm diameter, and not removable with a lens cleaning towel. Lens didn’t see any moisture nor had it been exposed to

wet environment so far and I‘m pretty careful in use. Not sure if the marks are on the outer or inner sided of the front glas. Picture quality is not effected.

Does anybody have an idea what it is? Will send the lens to Leica anyway.

Thanks a lot.

That looks disappointing. It looks like a manufacturing defect, but that’s just a WAG.  If lens is still under warranty, I suspect Leica will need to be of the opinion that the marks are not of your doing to repair at no cost. Even if you have to pay for front element to be replaced I wouldn’t hesitate to have it done.

Is this a brand new lens? How long have you had it?

Bought the lens new, about 1.5 years ago. Just not much use since. So it’s not brand new but little used so far.

Did you store this lens face down? I have heard that some lenses can have internal lubricant drip down if stored that way, especially at (I think) warm temperatures.

I always store my lenses face up just in case.

Could probably be, did not really pay attention on this till now. Wondered if this happens at room temperature with a 7k € lens 😳

The 35f2 ASPH comes in the box face down. It's the way leica packs it. My lens was manufactured in 2018 so it has been face down all this time.

Since the lubricant is on the lens's diaphragm to reduce blade wear and the diaphragm sits between the front and rear sets of elements, which way up you store it will only change the set of elements the lubricant drips onto - if it's going to.

In my experience it is very rare for lubricant to drip in a Leica lens because the lubricant is designed not to 'run' within thee lens's operational parameters (usually up to 45C from memory); what you might see in older lenses is the lubricant migrating along the diaphragm blades, which is a result of the lubricant breaking down from old age and a reminder to send the lens for a CLA.

Pete.
