ddp Posted November 28, 2007 Share #3 Posted November 28, 2007 Good lord. My very cynical, conspiracy laden mind is telling me one thing....but the practical part of my brain says don't write it down here.
sean_reid Posted November 28, 2007 Share #4 Posted November 28, 2007 And so builds the myth of the Summarits as "entry level" lenses for casual photographers. That's not really the case at all but marketing and reality are often not closely related. They may hit their target, though, with these kinds of ads. Lots of marketing effort goes towards women with some disposable income. Many marketing gurus believe hitting this target group is hitting, pun intended, the mother-load. Note that these new lenses were apparently able to erase any signs of stress in her subjects. Thankfully, that's a real imaginative leap. We hardly need lenses to be sanitizing and Oprah-cizing the world for us. Imagine the new "Dr. Phil" edition lenses. I think this mother forgot to mention the filters and the special reflections of the birthday candles. <G> Ah well, a fun break from writing reviews about what these new lenses really are. Cheers, Sean
wparsonsgisnet Posted November 28, 2007 Share #5 Posted November 28, 2007 I actually like the overall tone of the piece. It makes it clear that *anyone* can take a good picture with this camera. Her (surely, they didn't edit what she said... ) words seem very awkward. If I were the graphic artist, my first words would have been how easily the camera could translate my graphic vision........ I think they're on the right track. Till now NO ONE has heard of this camera. BTW, there's a year to go on my forecast from January that this camera would be required for pro's within 2 years. Cheers, Sean Agree Sean there NOT beginner lenses after some long test as Sean is doing also , I'm putting my money were my mouth is and buying one. They are much better than I thought they would be when introduced , now that I got a chance to work with them my opinion changed for the better. I have yet to miss focus with anyone of them since after the first day. I can't say that for my 90 cron.
stunsworth Posted November 28, 2007 Share #7 Posted November 28, 2007 Advertisement (gone after registration) Agree Sean there NOT beginner lenses after some long test as Sean is doing also They're there to atract people away from buying used Leica or new Zeiss lenses IMHO. Why buy used when you can get a new modern coded lens for not much more? Leica have probably realised that they'd quite like some of that action. They are certainly entry level IMHO, if only in price, not performance. Then again, what other company could sell an 'entry level' 35mm lens for £890 <grin>. ddp Posted November 28, 2007 Share #8 Posted November 28, 2007 Sorry...can't hold back the thought process....marketing is marketing. I know where they're going with this, but $6700 is alot of coin to throw out for a single mom of 2 - I don't care how good business is. I've read far too many "testimonials" on the web to be able to suspend disbelief at this point....
sdai Posted November 28, 2007 Share #9 Posted November 28, 2007 What's the ratio of pros and consumers buying Leica these days ... 10:1, 20:1, or may be 100:1? I agrees with Bill that *anyone* can take a good picture with this camera (and these lenses) ... photography is all about fun ... to me and many others. I don't see why some pros get offended ... Leica could survive and live well today because there're many paying customers primarily consist of doctors, lawyers, and affectionate parents. Anywhere you see discussions of the M8, you'll see owners discussing various lens options in the CV or Zeiss lines. Price is a HUGE factor here, especially with the latest increases. In order to keep it all in the family....they had to do it. There's no way Leica was going to introduce a "value" line that didn't perform though...Nikon & Canon both have normal priced optics, then they have the higher end stuff aimed at the pro / pro sumer market. No reason why Leica can't play the same game.
andybarton Posted November 28, 2007 Share #11 Posted November 28, 2007 And how many normal people in normal stores have been able to buy these yet? And get a response back to Leica? Maybe this lady is really Mrs Mancuso...

sean_reid Posted November 28, 2007 Share #15 Posted November 28, 2007 They are certainly entry level IMHO, if only in price, not performance. That's quite true, especially the latter. Guy and I both show a perspective that may differ a bit from some others here because we've both been testing these new lenses quite a bit over the past couple of weeks. I understand the overwhelming temptation to plug these lenses into a nice and neat little category but they're going to squirm out of it on their own merits - so long as people look objectively at actual optical performance. In time it does but ding bats like me have 30 k in leica and that takes a lot of work to pay them off and than make a profit to boot. Now here goes another 1.5k.
