New Q3 Owner

As FYI, I had to replace my Q3's rear screen recently and it took Leica NJ 6 weeks to repair.  If you have any questions about your status of your equipment, I suggest you call and speak to a live person (they were very nice).  For whatever reason, they never replied to my emails.

Thanks for your help, David and Peter!

My experience is different. When I pick up the Canon I can make it do what I want after several years practice, and I expect the same will be true with the Leica after a while. I am used to using aperture mode, and this may be my problem, since, whereas I often use f/8 on the R6 (even with my RF16 lens), I can get the same results with the Leica on f/2, which takes a bit of getting used to. I dont get on with using my thumb on the screen to move the focus point, as it often gets moved when I dont want it, so I turn off the screen sensitivity, leave it centre, focus, and then recompose. Using exposure compensation in full auto just changes the stop-shutter combination for the same exposure, and I find I need to temporarily select f/1.7 for it to work as I expect. I shoot raw, and have discovered that I can recover 2EV of highlight over-exposure in post processing, which is more than I can with the Canon. I am not complaining, of course, just getting used to how the Leica reacts differently to what appear to be the same controls as on the Canon.

I started watching the video, but I was so irritated by the presentation that I gave up. I will try again! 😃

The weather has generally been pretty unhelpful here since I got the Q3 at the end of November. This was a rare day, and I had to lift the shadows to show any activity in the square:

So your Q3 lasted approximately 6 months before a failure that will now take an indeterminate amount of time to resolve. It’s a new product, currently in production, and Leica can’t access a part. Doesn’t that sound a little odd? How are they manufacturing all the new Q3s without supply of this particular part?

crazy how owning a Leica camera can actually be a liability for working professionals. glad my Q3 is flawless so far and hope it remains so. sorry to hear your bad experience with the customer service of Leica. the more I read about Leicas CS the worse the image of this company becomes. sadly.

Batch production. You build a batch of one camera model, then switch to producing a batch of another model. Leica’s volumes are so small that typical mass market continuous production lines probably don’t make any sense. The same I believe also applies to lens production.

Update: May 24, 2024

I called Leica Repair today to see how long the repair will take. They answered the phone right away and explained the part I need (the SD card holder) must be manufactured and shipped from Germany. The wait will probably be a couple of months. They offered me a Q3 loaner for the duration of the repair, which sounds great to me. They will send me the loaner next week. When my camera is repaired they will notify me. I will then return the loaner and they will then ship my camera to me. I am glad I called.

I added that I’m thinking about buying an M11-P and asked how long repairs generally take. The reply was 60 days – and longer if the camera has to go back to Germany. Analogue repairs take much longer – nine months or longer.

I guess Leica is a small company and this is the price of admission.

This update is also on my blog.

This sounds like an excellent response from Leica.

Update: May 29, 2024

My Q3 loaner arrived today. Once I held the camera in my hands, I realized just how much I missed it. Luckily, I saved my profile settings on my Mac so I only had to transfer them to an SD card and load them into my loaner.

You can see the full history on my blog.

Update: August 7, 2024

Leica notified me a few days ago that my Q3 has been repaired. Leica sent me a prepaid shipping label and I returned the Q3 loaner. Today, my Q3 arrived well-packaged and working just fine. The entire process took about 100 days. With the loaner, I am happy with Leica service.

Looking forwards I feel the advantage of the large size dng will be cropability and I will try to get the hang of using the 35-50-75 lines

It's interesting: with. say, 35mm Qncrop framelines I can easily 'see into' that inner rectangle. Yet with an M the space around the lens frame lines, which traditionalists say is the essence of rangefinder composing, I would rather be without!
