Read on Thorsten Overgaard's Site: CL Update in 2024-2025. . .

Fuji manage 40mpx in a BSI CMOS APS-C sensor with good dynamic range and excellent IBIS. If the will is there Leica can do it.

Both the 40mpx Fujis are chunky compared to the CL but they do have tilt/swivel screens, a biggish EVF and bigger battery. Fuji admits that many of it's lenses don't come up to 40mpx standard, but I assume Leica have built in some headroom in the TL lens range.

The image quality from the XH-2 is astonishingly good considering the sensor size.

Agree. (And so does Leica, it appears) It makes no sense to aim a FF  camera at TL lenses, irrespective of pixel count. It will always crop.

FF cameras can be aimed at both FF and crop lenses. A strength of L-mount cameras IMO.

It's available on other mounts too, well Canon anyway, no experience here but I think also on Sony?

If you mean Sigma lenses i have no experience with them on other mounts than L but i guess so. For users owning Leica TL lenses there is no choice but Leica or Sigma bodies i suspect but i may be wrong.

Not referring just to Sigma lenses, but that Canon FF cameras will also accept Canon Crop lenses so shared mount in other words, and I believe Sony also, so not just a strength for L mount 😀.

We both forgot that we can also mount the TL lenses on Panasonic bodies, spoiled for choice really, though of course what most of us would have wanted was a CL2 for our lenses.

Been asking on this forum about SL cameras some time ago and i seem to have read that they don't work in crop mode with TL lenses . My memory may fail me but what you say sounds logical on both SL and Pana bodies alhough i find them too bulky for compact lenses like  M and TL's personally.

I had an SL2 for a couple of years and regularly used TL lenses without issue, just checked my LR catalogue, and same is true with Panasonic FF cameras S1R, S5 bodies and of course the FpL I have now.

Mounting my TL lenses on my SL2-S will automatically switch the camera to APS-c mode. Shame - as I mentioned in an earlier post - that mulitishot is unavailable in APS-c mode.

That would give a nice 20mb+? image with very light lenses with the 55-135 also being an apo!

Strange indeed. Is it the same with Sigma lenses?
Just curious since multishot is allowed with Sigma 18-50/2.8 on the Sigma FPL in spite of its higher resolution.

There is no market at Leica prices for any APS only camera IMHO.

Getting back to the original post, which was the release of a compact full-frame L-mount camera, what about a Q2 body with the L mount?

I don't know what the flange to sensor difference is between the Q and L, but probably feasible.

With an M-L adapter, an ersatz EVF-M!

FWIW, I was at Leica LA this weekend and posed this very question to one of the very kind employees.  What he said is much in line with what Rick in CO stated.  They have heard that the next big release will be an interchangeable lens Q.  Now, we've all been around the block a few times with rumors from dealers, and as a friend of mine pointed out: wouldn't this take away sales from the SL3?  But, the man said the next releases are the D-Lux 8 and an interchangeable lens Q!

Technically, I dont doubt a full frame interchangeable Q. But I doubt taking SL lens is pracitical if the goal is M size camera & lens.  SL  lens is too big. It could make sense if it's TL lens. Then, why full frame?

OK, then, make it CL2 to take TL lens? to avoid hurting SLmarket, price it up.

For someone don't see CL as the entry point of SL, would you buy this CL2 APS-C if the price is the same as SL3?

Or, another thought, could it be a full frame Q with fixed zoom lens with TL lens size?

Would not be a Q if the rumored camera has interchangeable lenses, Would not be an APS-C camera either if there is no market at Leica prices for that. Could then be a compact full frame L-mount camera capable to take both SL and M lenses in FF mode, as well as TL lenses in crop mode if needed. Just a guess but my Sigma FPL can do it with both full frame M lenses and APS-C Sigma ones already. I did not try SL lenses on the FPL but i suspect they can fit as well. Our colleague @Boojay knows certainly better than i do on this point.

No worry. All mirrorless cameras, including L mount, can accept M lens with adapter. It is done without any new Leica camera.

Without TL size lens, a full frame L mount  small camera makes no new sense at all.

An M-like L mount camera, aimed at M lens users? That can be interesting.
