DrM Posted January 26, 2024 Share #1 Posted January 26, 2024 (edited) Advertisement (gone after registration) Dear all, Occasionally, I work with filters on the lenses. I have the 21SEM, 35APO, 50LuxII, which have a 46,39,46mm filter size resp. My idea was to order a 39->46mm setup ring to able to stick to the 46mm filters, but I'm not sure this will fit: 35APO+setup ring+slimfilter+21SEMHood. Any experience here? Best, Marc Edited January 26, 2024 by DrM

robsonj Posted January 26, 2024 Share #2 Posted January 26, 2024 No experience, but I just bought a 39-43 and 39-46 step up ring off of Ali express, think they were 99c, so not much of a commitment to buy and try if no one comes forward with first hand experience. Shame Leica didn’t just make it a 46mm filter size to be inline

It’s so compact!

Best, Marc Honestly Mark- I went through this as well- I just bit the bullet and bought the correct filter sizes. I use Yellow or Orange Filters frequently and just ponied up and bought them in 46 and 39- It’s 15K ish worth of lenses you are talking about- I wouldn’t change the handling of the most expensive lens on your list for an 80-150 dollar filter. That’s my opinion though.
robsonj Posted January 26, 2024 Share #5 Posted January 26, 2024 Where do you find a set of 39mm color filters, other than the Leica branded ones, I have in the past looked for 39mm and not found much

For some lenses it can make the difference between being able to mount the sun hood with filter or not... I had some B+W UV/IR E39 for the M8, and the standard Leica lens cap (push on) would not fit anymore with the B+W filter on. It fitted, but would fall off very easily. With the Leica filters the filter ring was slightly smaller and everything worked as if it the filter was not there. Also the older click-on sun hoods can not be reversed mounted on the lens like I normally do when the Lens is not in use. I think in some cases the hood could not be mounted with the B+W in place. B&H has provided excellent response, with each of my orders. Heliopan is a well-established maker of high-quality filters. Look for “PMC” if you want multi-coated. DrM Posted January 26, 2024 Author Share #9 Posted January 26, 2024 Thanks for all the enthusiastic replies. However, my question was more about the physical fit of a 35APO>setup>46mm filter>21SEM. I never used a setup ring.. does it add size beyond the 46mm filters? Or is the diameter identical? Best Marc

Best Marc A 39mm to 46mm step-up up ring is 46mm outside diameter, so given it is wider than the 39mm diameter there will be no vignetting using 46mm filters with a step-up ring on a 39mm lens, you could even add a 46mm screw on lens hood. Leica filters are nothing special, indeed Leica don't even make filters, they only brand them. So look for B+W, Heliopan, then Hoya etc.. Are you assuming or just passing on hear say? I wouldn’t be shocked if they have a partner in making them- Doesn’t mean they aren’t any different then another- Are they worth the extra cost? Maybe Here is an article that tests them all- There are some differences https://www.lensrentals.com/blog/2017/06/the-comprehensive-ranking-of-the-major-uv-filters-on-the-market/
