Well, this is sort of a bastard lens, as it will have the outer appearance of the 50 Rigid, but will have the Speed Panchro Series II optical block.

A copy

Hmmm, it is a copy *albeit a faithful copy, and something for us to talk about (sic)

There may be a misunderstanding here. Usually, LLL produces copies of e.g. old Leica lenses which are as close to the original as possible. See for example the Summicron 35mm v1.

However, this new lens by LLL will have the outer looks of an old Leica Summicron 50mm rigid, but will NOT have a reproduction of its optics. Rather, LLL chose to use the already developed optical block of the Speed Panchro II, which is an old Cooke lens, not a Leica lens. So the new LLL Rigid will not be a faithful copy of an old Leica lens. Instead, it will look like a Leica lens, but will have reproduced Cooke optics in it, that is, it will have the optical cell of a former Cooke lens. That's why I said it is or will be some kind of a bastard lens.

Indeed, the devil's in the details.

A faithful copy of the 50 Rigid housing ;)

There are so many nice rígids for sale. I don’t see the point of this lens...

Presumably, muskyvibes, because it isn't a 'Rigid' Summicron in anything other than looks. As stated in the title of the LLL link in the OP;

"Light Lens Lab 50mm Rigid Speed Panchro II"

There has been a lot of love shown here for the 'original' LLL Speed-Panchro II offering and trying to find a genuine original S-P-II in good optical condition is hardly a simple (or inexpensive!) matter. I can easily imagine that many folk might like the rendering of the LLL S-P-II but, at the same time, could be put-off by its rather arcane body-design. Put this optical block in (a replica of) one of Leitz' most beautiful and classic shapes, however, and they might well be on to a winner.

In case it passed you by here is a link to the 15-page (so far) thread dedicated to the LLL S-P-II;

Were any of the original 50mm 'Rigid' lenses given the 'Red-Paint' index treatment? I ask because my '54 35mm Summaron has paint instead of the red-plastic hemisphere.

I wonder if there will be a version of this lens in Black-Paint forthcoming?......:-k......

While it is a cool looking design I don't quite see the point if it has the Speed Panchro optics. Just buy the Speed Panchro. This would also just make for confusion if they ever did decide to release an optical copy the Rigid itself.

Yea. I think so too. Also the SP comes in black and brassed black, but this rigid copy is only Silver chrome. I understand the focusing tab on the SP is weird. If I had it the first thing I would do is take it off and focus with the ring.

I see the bare brass edition comes with an extra focusing tab that is a stick so you can swap it out.

I had the SP for a short while but too much internal flare and resulting low contrast, hood or no hood, towards and even away from the light. Nice wide open but at $700+ just not worth keeping to use only at f2 for me. Love my LLL Elcan and 8-element copies though, my most used lenses.

A true Rigid copy would be nice at the introductory price as really clean, flawless Leica originals are double that.

It looks fantastic. I’m glad they went with the second version of the Rigid’s barrel design.

Do you mean the wider focussing ring with shallower scallops? I agree. Nice-looking thing altogether.
