Hello friends,

just to remember: Now it's more than five years away that Leica announced APO-Summicron-SL 21mm & 24mm: September 15th, 2018.

And we are still waiting...

Hello. Just curious. Did Leica ever officially announce the SL 21 and 24 ? Or did we just see information from an internal Leica PowerPoint presentation with both the SL 21 and 24 listed on a SL lens road map passed around on the forums "unofficially" ? I don't remember if I ever say any official announcement for either lens and if so where can I find the official announcement?

24mm Elmar is my most used wide angle on my M10-R/M10-M. Prefer it over 21mm....less exaggerated than the 21 SEM and better corners. I am disappointed, especially as 24-35-75 APO L-Summicrons was the kit I envisioned. I guess two outta three ain't bad....

I found this from 2018 at: https://www.reddotforum.com/content/2018/09/leica-adds-three-more-sl-prime-lenses-to-roadmap/

seems official to me.

At the press event today, Leica announced three new SL lenses. Slated to be released in 2020, these new optics will add fast, wide-angle primes to the system. With focal lengths of 21, 24 and 28mm, all lenses feature an f/2 maximum aperture. Also, while unusual for wide angles, all three designs will be APO lenses, or Apochromatically corrected. Usually reserved for 50mm and longer, APO designations usually indicate the highest level of optical quality.

Additionally, and not really a surprise, all three rely on aspherical technology, or ASPH in Leica's naming, to achieve maximum performance. Like all the Summicron-SL lenses, barrel size is consistent across the entire range, with a 67mm front filter thread. So, these wides will have the same measurements as the 75 and 90 APO-Summicron-SL.

Leica Store Miami calls it an "announcement," but the image says "roadmap," which is a different thing.

I am not apologizing for Leica, clearly everyone (including them) wanted these lenses to be available by now.

Not sure why people aren't using any of the M lenses - wide angle variants; focus throw is short so you can focus very quickly.

If I need anything wider than 35mm, I reach for my 28mm M-cron or wider yet, the WATE.

I have no need for another 'huge' L lens.

Frame-it,  Both M 24 lenses were discontinued.  The probability of a SL 24 that Trickness referred to, most likely will not be forthcoming from what I was told.  The good news the SL 21 will arrive soon.  r/ Mark

All three M 24s were discontinued. Whenever I ask anyone from Leica about the SL 24 (I do that a lot), they acknowledge that it's been promised, but can't say when it will come out. But it hasn't been dumped as a product. For now, I make do with the 24 Elmarit-M on the SL.

The SL lenses have a closer focusing distance than the M lenses, which I like for a lot of pictures. Also like their better resolution.

The biggest issue for me is the size of the L lenses.  It's a mixed bag for me:  I love the AF, especially at night or hard to focus conditions; I love the weather-resistance; I love the feel of the manual focus; I love the quality/reso.

But I hate the weight and the size.  It's just not portable and you stick out like a sore thumb in public. I was hiking with an SL2 and 35mm APO SL and my arm was killing me carrying it around. Just my thoughts.  For weddings and special events, its hard to beat the SL cameras/L lenses.

Despite the 24mm elmar (the one I own) being absolutely stellar.

My 21 SEM is absolutely genius as well. But 24 is just a bit of an odd focal length, anything that’s a hard sell on the M is it gonna be a much harder sell on L mount I think.

It’s funny, I was out with my SL2 and the 75 APO SL all this week and I didn’t even think about it. I think part of that is down to the comfort of the strap I use (Rock and Roll)

24mm is typically just above the wide angle distortion focal length--so normally no worries about the alien look toward the edges of the frame that can come with some wider focal lengths. I see 24mm FL available in both primes and zooms in Canon, Sony, Nikon, Sigma, Panasonic mirrorless systems--seems like a pretty normal FL across many systems. The GM 24/1.4 prime, the smallest GM prime lens I think, is on my favorites list too.

Some years back I purchased the M Summilux 24 unknowing that it was to become discontinued at some point. I found this lens is very good for interiors and closer proximity wide angle compositions. It's also super-duper, faster than AF, easy to Zone Focus with an M camera IMO. * I use Live View to frame 24mm.

Looks like I like the 24mm very much! So of the hopefully pending, two SL APOs 21 and 24, my preference would be SL APO level IQ in a 24mm lens. But not even a hint of a rumor for the SL 24 APO, but many of us have seen the SL 21 APO data sheet, so chances are...

I disagree. Sigma thinks the 24mm is a good choice and released 3 different variations of a 24mm, plus there's also the Panasonic version.

Canon, Nikon and Sony also have multiple 24mm lenses in their stables, so it is a popular lens after all.

If you think of all the possible lenses that Leica could focus their efforts and limited resources on producing, both M and L mount, an APO SL 24 has got to be near the bottom of that list. But I guess we’ll see. They certainly don’t seem to be in any kind of rush to release it. Perhaps if and when the SL3 comes out and becomes wildly popular, things could get interesting.
